Does anyone know what this is?

I've never seen it in person, this photo was posted on another site and the woman who found it could not figure out what food to put in it or how to fill it but no mention of where the food goes was ever addressed.

Does anyone know what this is?

A member of another group found this feeder and asked about what bird would use it and what food to put in it, any help would be appreciated.

    2 birds from different places

Thanks for the confirmation, I appreciate the help, I was hoping on the dark eyed junco I was wrong but at least I got both correct!

    2 birds from different places

I had to travel last week and I got a few birds I would like confirmation on my ID's, this first was in Wichita Kansas, i think it is a great crested flycatcher. I only took one photo because I thought at first it was a western kingbird that kept putting up its head feathers for some reason but...

    Eastern Sierra Nevada finch ID

Thanks Nutcracker, I'm not disagreeing with you but (well I guess I am!) but even when at eye level bill is straight, just don't have photo, but I agree, breast is very streaked, could it be a hybrid?

    Eastern Sierra Nevada finch ID

I was in Minden NV yesterday and saw a few birds, one in particular is giving me trouble. This is either a Cassin's or a house finch, every time I look I change my mind, here are my thoughts after a night of thinking: Straight upper bill Red crown with brownish nape Dull reddish over the rest...

    Finch near Pasadena CA

Thank you Silverwolf, I think you're right, though I fear I'll never know which one for sure as I've studied each species photos from the same view and can't find a distinctive feature that tells me one way or another. Maybe the range or habitat will tell me more, I'll take a closer look at...

    Finch near Pasadena CA

Sorry, I don't have any other photos, and as for info about chest, that's my fault, back, face and wings with no pattern at all are visible in photo. Edt: looking at photo you can see sides and partial view of bottom is same solid brown as the rest of bird.

    Finch near Pasadena CA

I thought that too, but breast is bare and no barring or marks on wings. I'm no expert so it could be but I've never seen one like this if it is, and house finches were common there.

    California loon confusion

Don't common loons have more dark markings on the throat?

    California loon confusion

These 2 loons were kind of far away, I believe they are different, both were on the opposite end of the harbor from me so I appologize for the photo quality. There were several of each, but the first type was the only ones that got sort of close. I believe the first one is a red-throated loon...

    Malibu sparrow ID

Had to go to Southern California for some non-bird related business and while there I did see a few birds, one was this sparrow, it was on a hillside a few 100 yards (within easy eye site) of the ocean. Any help would be great, thanks.
