    Eurasian Collared Dove in Missouri

In the last several years Eurasian Collared Doves have been documented breeding in South Dakota, even in the more northern parts of the state. At first very isolated instances, but definitely becoming more common with each passing year. Paul Sioux Falls,SD

8x20 bins - Leica or Nikon

Never tried the Nikons, but I have a pair of the little Leica's and you would have to break my arms to get me to part with them. I keep them in my pickup at all times so they are handy in case I see something that needs a better look. (I purchased a new 8x42 Ultravid last winter and have just...

Possible Ivory Billed Woodpecker Sighting in East Texas

Michael: Indeed I am well aware that soon after a wildfire certain species of Woodpeckers (along with many other species of birds and wildlife) will thrive in the remaining snags. Last summer I birded several major burn areas in the Black Hills of SD and found black-backed, three-toed and Lewis'...

Possible Ivory Billed Woodpecker Sighting in East Texas

Some of you may need to check your facts a little better before condemning the entire logging industry. If you would see first hand the results of the wildfires that have recently ravaged the west you may understand that had these areas been thinned there would be thousands if not millions more...

gthang: I suppose soon it will be W's fault that the Ivory Billed Woodpecker is extinct? Paul SFSD

House Sparrows in decline? Not in my garden!

I suppose I would miss them if they were altogether gone forever, but it would take a while, let me tell you! House Sparrows and Starling are the biggest pests you can imagine here in sunny South Dakota. If I could will them to you, you would have them in more abundance than you could tolerate...

    How to catch a rabbit?

A .22 or pellet rifle work wonders for rabbits. Its pretty hopeless though because like it says in a previous post, for every one eliminated 3 seem to take its place. I have also been told that used cat litter sprinkled about a garden will keep them out, but haven't tried it. Paul SFSD

    Hard-of-Hearing Advice?

I have a somewhat similar problem but mine is more related to certain frequencies apparently. I hear the majority of birds just fine, but am completely incapable of hearing others at all. I have been within 20 ft of Blue-Winged Warbler, Golden-Winged Warbler, and Black Throated Green Warbler...

    Las Vegas Birding

Hi and thanks to all who responded. I did get to Sunset Park for about 90 minutes last Sunday, and had excellent birding there. Life birds were: Phainopepla Hooded Oriole (beatiful male, awesome) Ladder-backed Woodpecker Black-chinned & Anna's Humminbirds Green-tailed and Abert's Towhees...

how many pairs of bins ?

postcardcv- When the time comes and you look to upgrade the compacts, I would urge you to give the 8x20 Leicas some consideration. Very nice little bins! Paul SFSD

    Hello from South Dakota

Hi LouAnn from Sioux Falls, SD. We have E Screech Owls that nest in our neighborhood in E SF each year, I have a nest box up trying to get them into our backyard but so far no luck. Long Eared Owls, You are a lucky one! If they nest there again this year let me know. If you wouldn't mind my son...

    Hello from northeast SD

Hello Patchesmagoo from another South Dakotan! As near as I know, so far its just you and me on this site from SD, but I think you'll find it a great and addicting place to be, and I am sure we will have plenty of fellow SDakotans before long. Paul Burger SFSD

    West Niles Virus

I guess the saddest part of the whole scenario is that last year (after a casualty or two) it was decided that wholesale spraying of insecticide was the answer to the problem. So spray it was, from airplanes and trucks going up and down the neighborhoods. Nevermind that this is, in all...

    What to feed my swans

Swans on the East Coast - can anyone out that direction set me straight on the status of what is really going on out there? When I was at Cape May a few years back they seemed everywhere, and one spot we birded the swans had actually blocked the path and were less than enthusiastic about...
