Head Opinions: Sirui VH-10 vs Gitzo GH1720

Sorry to hear that! Given the high cost of these heads, we should expect years of trouble-free operation. The U.S. Repair center is C.R.I.S., in Arizona. They didn't provide any detailed explanation. All I was told is that internal parts needed replacement, so it took quite a while to get it...

Head Opinions: Sirui VH-10 vs Gitzo GH1720

Just following up on my post here. My 2720QR head was repaired under warranty (2 years), and now performs as good as new. After it gets used through this winter, I'll know how the repair holds up.

    Aftermarket lens covers

Yes they are! (Conquest HD, that is) I contacted Zeiss about how easy they fall off, and their answer was they have no alternative available at this time. Now my rain covers have broken the little tabs that keep them on the neck strap, so I've contacted Zeiss for replacements - haven't heard...

    Aftermarket lens covers

Opticron makes a complete line of lens caps, they're available on Amazon. The 42mm versions (50-52mm outside diameter) fit on the objective of 8x42 Conquest HD Binos.

Head Opinions: Sirui VH-10 vs Gitzo GH1720

I use the larger Gitzo 2720QR, and after less than 2 years, it's essentially unusable, the vertical tilt is nearly locked solid, even with the control knob all the way loosened. This is the 2nd one, after the first failed within 90 days, and was replaced by the selling company. I use it on a...

    Oly 300mm F4 - My First Pics

AcDSee supports the EM1 MII, but their MAC product doesn't look currently available, except in beta, perhaps that's worth a look. The subscription model for lightrooom is really unappealing, this is just a hobby for me. For what I do, OSX Photos works great, easy to use, and very fast (just...

    Oly 300mm F4 - My First Pics

Last time I checked, RAW for the OMD EM1 Mark II wasn't supported. I just looked again, and as of 3/27/2017, it is now supported. Of course, I'm forced to upgrade to Sierra, which will break other applications that don't yet support Sierra. There doesn't appear to be a way to just update...

    Oly 300mm F4 - My First Pics

I'm really enjoying this lens, despite the fact that I'm stuck on crutches a few more days. This Pileated Woodpecker visited our yard yesterday, and was taken at 300mm, 1/1000, f4, ISO250. When I was using 1/500, his head was moving so fast while hammering it was tough to get a crisp shot...

    Oly 300mm F4 - My First Pics

This photo of an Eastern Meadowlark isn't anything to write home about, but given the dreary day, requiring ISO 3200 at 1/500, cropped from about the center 3rd of the image, it's OK. The noise seems pretty high, perhaps I should turn the noise filter back on to the low setting? I had the 1.4x...

    Oly 300mm F4 - My First Pics

It was overcast yesterday, and I was trying to get a photo of this Golden-Crowned Kinglet in the woods. With my 75-300, I would have had either a pretty high ISO, or too low of a shutter speed for these hyper-active birds. I was able to get shutter speed to 1/320, @ ISO400, f4.5. I think I'm...

MFT lens 100-400mm, Leica DG, announced

A few thoughts - Does your GX8 have an anti-shock setting like the Olympus cameras? Some of those mechanical shutter shots seem less clear than the e-shutter. - Perhaps test your lens/camera combo for front/back focus (I like to use the 5 AA battery method). - My experience with BIF on this...

The WI Sub-forum looks pretty quiet, anyone else here? :)

Should you tick "heard only" birds?

I always count heard-only birds, if I'm confident in the call or song. I agree about thrushes, they're my favorite singers, especially the Wood Thrush!

DSLR or mirrorless for wildlife photography

I'll be intested to see how you like this combo. I've been using an EM5/II with that lens, and recently upgraded to the EM1 Mark II. The speed, battery life, and ergonomics of the EM1/II is a big improvement. I thought of switching to Nikon/Canon, given the cost of the EM1/II, but after...

    Optician MM 3 50 ED

I concur! I purchased the Opticron MM3 50 w/SDL v2 for a trip to NZ in 2016, it fit in my carry-on with room to spare for binocs & camera. Along with a Sirui CF travel scope, it weighs svelte 4 lbs. The image quality seems as good as my Vortex Razor. I'm tempted to pick up the MM4 60 also...
