    Anna's have vacated

Only one Anna's seen at the feeder the past 3 days. Perhaps there is enough blooming now. I suspect, though, that they have just moved their base of operations. So far I have not seen a Rufous, but I heard of a sighting on Orcas on March 5.

    1st Rufous! Yah ---- hooo.....

No rufous yet, but the pulmonaria is blooming - and that's generally a requirement before they make their presence known. Last year the overwintering Anna's had the territory so well staked out that it took a good while for the arriving rufous to get at the feeder. We'll see how it goes this year.

    1st Rufous! Yah ---- hooo.....

It's good to know they've made it to your location. Everything's early this year, so I'm thinking we might see the rufous in the Puget Sound region by the end of Feb rather than mid-March as is more normal. Molly

Dana, it took us a couple of winters to really believe our ears when we thought we heard hummingbirds on Orcas after November, let alone in January! We always took the feeder in in October after the rufous left to go south. That was 6 years ago, and there is now quite a population of Anna's...

An Unusual Visitor To The Hummingbird Feeder

Some years ago I did find a dead Anna's hanging tightly to the deer fencing near a feeder hidden by fallen branches. It had been a prolonged period of very cold weather, and I could only speculate that he'd died of exposure. That was in the days before we began feeding them throughout the winter.

An Unusual Visitor To The Hummingbird Feeder

It's been several years since I have had a feeder with perches. During the very cold weather the Anna's may perch in a tree 5 or 6 feet away between trips to the feeder. As another member has mentioned, they sometimes appear to sleep, but are ready to defend their territory at a moment's...

Plants and flowers that attract hummingbirds

Pulmonarias (lungwort) is the first draw in the spring, followed by red currant, delphinium, fuchsia, honeysuckle and crocosmia. By fall the only thing left is the hardy fuchsia.

    First baby Anna's!

I have a fine photo of the little fellow, taken on the 8th, but I am totally stymied when it comes to posting anything more than Facebook photos, which aren't great on detail. My Picasa attempts have ended in frustration. Admittedly, I am not yet web savvy, but I am trainable. Are there any...

    First baby Anna's!

He (she?) finally had a go at the feeder, but mostly sits in the magnolia tree right outside the window and bobs around watching Mom.

Oh, Dana, Those are fine indeed! My own photos are taken perching against the back of my recliner with the Canon "power shot" braced against the window! Still, Mr. Anna's came through pretty well in that amazing early snow. I must learn how to attach photos. Thanks for your beautiful ones! Molly

Keeping nectar thawed for the Anna's

Thanks all! Great suggestions, and the links to further discussion were much appreciated. We're into a milder period now - so there'll be time to check out the hardware for a more waterproof lighting. I'll probably end up with a combination of methods. There IS also a slight motivation to...

Keeping nectar thawed for the Anna's

Thanks , Chris. Today it's 18F and I've not seen any action since I unplugged the light at 5:45p. Think we've made it through the worst. Molly
