Objective Lens cover for Retrovid 10x40

I just purchased from Amazon (about $10.00) a set of lens cover for my Retrovid 10x40. They fit pretty good and the rubber/plastic cover is somewhat soft so I'm not sure how well they will hold up long term. They are: 32mm Binocular/Monocular Objective Lens Caps Internal Diameter 46.5-48mm...

    Considering a Partial Camera Upgrade - D500 w/ 200-500mm lens

I generally try to keep my shutter speed equal to or greater than the focal length of the lens. So in your case where you have your zoom at 500mm, I would set my shutter speed to at least 1/500 and as a previous poster noted, for birds in flight you need your speed set to at least 1/1000 with...

    Juvenile Cooper's Hawk

Took this photo in the woods near my home. I'm pretty sure it's a Cooper's Hawk and not a Broad-wing Hawk. What I noticed about it were the claws on this bird. They look deadly and judging from the red stains on its feet which is probably blood stains from a recent meal, it knows how to use them.

    Juvenile Eastern Red Tail Hawk?

Thanks! I'm use to seeing the mature hawks with its colorful feathers. This might be the first time I've seen a juvenile one flying. I didn't realize how whitish their feathers are.

    Juvenile Eastern Red Tail Hawk?

Took the following photo at extreme range at Edwin Forsythe NWR in Smithsville, NJ last weekend. I think it's a juvenile Red Tail Hawk that's starting to mature. Thoughts?

D.I.Y. Leica "Retrovid" 7x35 focussing improvement.

There is an alternative to using an adhesive tape. There's this product called Alien Tape that is a very soft and sticky tape without using any adhesive. I recently tried it out on my hack and after several (and I do mean several) tries, I was able to make it work. I had to remove the tape...

D.I.Y. Leica "Retrovid" 7x35 focussing improvement.

As an FYI for those that uses standard measurement instead of metric, the 15/16 inch O-ring gasket is the 25mm equivalent. This hack also worked on my 10x40 Retrovid so I'm assuming the focusing knob is the same size throughout the Retrovid line.

Nikon D600 or D7100 for bird photography?

From my understanding, there is very little difference in specifications between a D3400 and D7100. Both are 24mp with the D3400 shooting 12-bit Raw while the D7100 shoots 14-bit Raw. The main difference is that the D7100 allows for more control of the settings you can shoot with. As a...

Has anyone ever heard of an Albino Red-Tail Hawk?

Red-tail hawks are fairly common in the NJ/Northeast area and that's what I thought it was except for the lack of color in its feathers. This was the first time I ever saw a leucistic version of any raptor in the wild. That's an interesting fact about the lack of melanin on the durability of...

Has anyone ever heard of an Albino Red-Tail Hawk?

Thanks for the info! That's the bird I saw at Bombay Hook NWR.

Has anyone ever heard of an Albino Red-Tail Hawk?

I've taken this photo 3 years ago at Bombay Hook NWR in Delaware. It was taken with a Nikon D500/500mm lens at extreme range. It looked like a Red Tail Hawk but it had only white and some black feathers. The attached photo was cropped, sharpened and converted from RAW to Jpeg, but no color...

    Equipment overhaul?

I'm a former owner of the 500mm F/4 AFS lens and I switched to the 500mm F/5.6 PF lens with no regrets. The 500mm F/4 lens is a great lens but it does have limitations you need to be aware of. It's a big heavy lens that you will need at minimum a good monopod and head. Recommend a carbon...

    D500 vs D850

Two other things to consider when comparing D500 and D850. As mentioned earlier, the D850 needs an external battery grip to get similar FPS performance which also means that D850 configuration is bulkier and heavier. If you're planning on trekking through the woods on long excursions, that...

    Nikkor 500mm f5.46pf lens - any users yet ?

I paired the 500 PF with the TC-17EII and the auto-focusing was very slow and had no luck with it for BIF (using a D500). Although to be honest, the autofocusing on the TC-17EII was a little slow on my other lens too. Need to save my pennies for a new TC-14EIII.... Compared to the 500mm F/4...
