    Looking at you

A Red Shouldered Hawk looking straight at me in my backyard. I was wondering why the birds and chipmunks at the feeder disappeared.

    Birds on Dateline

Sure had me fooled. I have seen probably tens of thousands of starlings, even seen the sky blackened with them at times, but have never seen brown ones before. I guess they do that further north than I live. Thanks, Marshall

    Birds on Dateline

These two birds were on dateline tonight in I believe Central Park NY, USA. I have never seen these before, and cannot find them in my bird book. Anyone have any idea what they are? Brown back with some white speckles, coal black chest with white dots. Marshall

    Belted Kingfisher

This fellow was fishing by the shore (previous picture), and when I went closer he flew in circles squawking at me until finally landing in the top of this dead tree.

    Raccoons 2 -vs- Me 0

That is pretty well true. I tried everything and they would find a way around it. The only thing I found which totally defeated them was a Dudley Flipper with a 18 inch piece of 2 1/2 or 3" pvc pipe sitting on top of it on the pole. I have pictures of a BIG raccoon trying to get by that with...

Suet or not to Suet? (S.California)

It is my understanding that one should not feed suet when it is warm as it can go rancid. I have not heard of no-melt. What are the ingredients? Sounds like they have mixed it with wax or something, and if that is the case I would hesitate to feed it at any temperature. Marshall

So apparently the town I live in bans bird feeding...

I know what you mean. My wife and I were picnicking at the park a couple of weeks ago, and a goose came up to me. I tossed it a piece of my Subway sandwich. Shortly after that we had a whole gaggle of geese begging to be fed only a couple of feet away. They didn't get real aggressive, but as...

What was this in my nestbox

I have a bluebird nestbox which was up over the summer. In the spring a bluebird build in it, but opted to raise their family in a neighbor's nestbox. After abandoning it, a chickadee built a nest in it over the bluebird nest. It too decided to not use the box in the end, so nothing ever...

    Deer standoff with kitten

Six deer came into my son's backyard, and their new kitten decided to defend his territory. Surprisingly this kitten was able to run and hiss at the deer and they would retreat, then work their way back up to the house in a few minutes. Quality is not that great since this is from a...
