Birding Info for Las Vegas (US) 6th - 16th Nov 2007

Matt: We were in Vegas in September. We visited the Red Rock Canyon just west of Vegas. A very beautiful area and the Willow Springs area there was full of birds. Got some good looks at Pinyon jays there as well as a few other species such as ash throated flycatchers. It's a very nice area...

    Race to Finish

These caterpillars were found on a bush on the Osa Penninsula of Costa Rica. They are probably a species of Sphinx moth larvae. The butterfly expert on site could not identify them and suggested that they were a species of moths. The large tail spike makes me think they are Sphinx moth...

Announcing the September 2007 theme challenge - Insects

I have a photo of caterpillars that I've not been able to identify. I have consulted a scientist in the area who specializes in butterflies and his comment was that it was probably a moth -- which leaves hundreds of possibilities. He was not encouraging that it could ever be identified from...

Thanks everyone! I, too, think it looks like a painting. How often in photography do you get the birds placed like that? It's an uncropped image with no bird is at the center focus area. Linda

    Scarlet Macaws in the Mist

These scarlet macaws were flying from tree to tree feeding on almonds. They were shrouded in a fine mist that blew in from the Pacific Ocean and sparkled in the sunlight. This is an uncropped, full frame photo. Look closely and you will see 5 macaws.

    The EYES have it

This is a red-eyed tree from Costa Rica. Since this species is nocturnal, it was photographed at night, using flash. There is a small hazard when photographing these frogs in this environment. Shortly after this photo was taken, he jumped and landed on my camera. My husband then had fun...

    Gardening for the birds

Several years ago we planted a native honeysuckle (Lonicera). It's covered in nice tubular red flowers right now and continues all summer. The hummers love it. If you have an arbor or a nice place for one, consider honeysuckle. While they also love the Japanese honeysuckle, they are so...

    Hummingbird Quiz

Marian: Sorry I haven't had time to really take a good look at your pictures. My husband and I gave a talk at the local bird club this week and used some of the pictures I posted for ID. With a very expert birder in the audience, I got no challenges on the Id of the hummers although he did...

    "Baby Hummingbirds" gallery on PBASE

Along this same line, the most recent Outdoor Photographer magazine has a small article about photographing hummingbirds on the nest. The photographer describes that a nest was in a park near a boardwalk and various people gathered on the boardwalk to watch. He decided to try to photograph the...
