Zeiss SFL 8x40 versus Victory SF 8x42?

I am owning a SF 8x42 for quite a while now. Following all the buzz about the SFLs I had the chance to test one at a dealers place. From my point of view, the SFL did not in any way compare to the SF which is very obviously superior in every aspect apart weight. My decision: keep the SF and...

What's wrong with the Zeiss Harpia??

So I bought a Harpia 85mm the day before yesterday. Thanks you all for your support. Was thinking back and forth, hope I did not make a mistake... Tried it yesterday for the first time bird watching at a lake at dawn... could see a lot of things I couldn't with my SF 8x42. Still have problems...

What's wrong with the Zeiss Harpia??

Hi everybody, so the day before yesterday I had the chance to try both Harpia (85&95) and compare it to a Kowa 99. The first thing which is quite apparent is the FOV of the Zeiss at wide settings - this is really awesome. The Kowa gets comparable to the Zeisses at max magnification however...

What's wrong with the Zeiss Harpia??

Well, I guess there are two different "optical systems" we have to look at: one is the scope with its own physics - and the other is the human eye. If we just look at the scope, the optical parameters are fixed: (amongst others) magnification and exit pupil. These two factors determine...

What's wrong with the Zeiss Harpia??

One thing which comes to my mind right now and which is not really being discussed is the advantage of having a smaller / stepped down aperture at wide settings: improved depth of field! It is a lot easier to bring / keep things in focus! So it comes down to actually when to when does one...

What's wrong with the Zeiss Harpia??

Thank you all for your answers!! Really appreciate your inputs!! The ergonomic point makes me really think right now. As in Binos - you can't go wrong with one of the Alphas in terms of optics. But in terms of usage, there might be tangible differences. I guess before spending I need to find a...

What's wrong with the Zeiss Harpia??

Hello Forum, I am a happy user of a Zeiss Victory SF 8x42 bino since not very long - but enjoy the views I can get from it. I am really getting a lot of fun viewing nature and wildlife in general, I got the feeling that my personal view of my surroundings are tremendously enlarged with that...

New Zeiss binos 8x40 SFL and 10x40 SFL

and its considerably smaller overall. The length is 173mm vs. 144mm. that's 29mm less. That's quite a bit smaller and lighter than the SF

New Zeiss binos 8x40 SFL and 10x40 SFL

    ... don't forget weight - the SF 8x42 weights 790g vs. the 640g of the 8x40 SFL. that's a 150g less (20%)...

    Brand New Victory Issue?

Hello! I own a SF 8x42 just since a couple weeks. I had the same issue, my thoughts were that the grittyness comes from some grease in the focussing mechanics. It took a little while to evenly distribute, now its all gone. Maybe you need to be a little more patient! Mine works now flawlessly...

I am thinking the new 32 mm alphas from Swarovski and Zeiss are the best birding binoculars you can buy right now.

Here you can find some insight regarding twilight factor…: https://blogs.zeiss.com/sports-optics/hunting/en/twilight-factor/ At the end, however, aperture counts! Have fun! Andreas

I am thinking the new 32 mm alphas from Swarovski and Zeiss are the best birding binoculars you can buy right now.

Guys, you are missing the fact, that the steeper the viewing angle (the higher the magnification) the less light will be reflected into the optical system. So the amount of light depends on TWO factors, the aperture AND the magnification. This is what the twilight factor tries to combine… All...
