    convert spectrogram to wav file?

Generally in making a spectrogram, the phase information from the FFT is thrown out, as it isn't needed to make the image -- only the magnitudes are used. To run the inverse process and build the exact time-domain signal, you'd need to know the phases corresponding to each frequency component...

Birds won't eat Spicy bird seed!

I tried to deal with a squirrel problem by adding cayenne pepper to the seeds. Initially the mammals were indeed repulsed, but they kept coming back and developed an ability to feed on it anyway. Never underestimate hunger. So I escalated my tactics. In the end, I was dumping Tabasco sauce on...

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

I agree. But, rules and guidelines change. Nothing is set in stone. All that needs to happen is that a critical mass of postmodernists get into the ICZN. They do not care about science's practices as they relate to priority, rules, rights, etc., for these are merely tools of 'white colonialism'...

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

Well I just took the time to write the most thoughtful, polite, yet direct statements I could on this, and submitted them at the AOS site mentioned above. I'm asking that they simply go back to the NACC's reasonable proposal. Negotiate. Be moderate. Give both sides some ground. And remember that...

    Parabolic vs Shotgun

I have never experienced any problems with moderate wind. I have not taken it out on extremely windy days, so I cannot say under what conditions it will suffer. It might be worth inquiring at the Wildtronics site. The founder of the company is very responsive and has tested his products extensively.

    Parabolic vs Shotgun

I use a Wildtronics Pro Mono parabolic with a Zoom F3 and absolutely love it. My shotgun sees very little use anymore.

    The 10% Club - Milestones

No. I'm legally blind, not totally blind. If there is a lot of light, I can see through a very narrow tunnel, about 2% of what a normally sighted person sees. So I can see certain types of birds. If we are scoping a lake shore, for example, or other places where the birds are sedentary and well...

    The 10% Club - Milestones

Crossed 5,000 last year. Ultimate goal is 50% of all species, so a few hundred more to go. I intend to set the world record for most species identified by a legally blind person. As far as I know, I already have.

What did you see in your binoculars today?

Yesterday, a totally eclipsed sun filtered through Texas clouds was in my bins.

Do you count heard only birds on your life list?

Of my 5,006 lifers, I was only able to get audio recordings for 966 of them so far. So I guess only about 20% of my birds have been 'properly ticked' by the standards that I'd apply if I was being a stickler. I estimate that about 1% of my lifers fall into the heard-only bin overall, so about...

Do you count heard only birds on your life list?

I know a birder who has been 100% blind from birth. I have had the privilege to go birding with him. He loves birds no less than anyone here, even though he has no concept of what "blue' even means, for example. While it would be absurd to say that he isn't missing anything due to his...

Do you count heard only birds on your life list?

Not 'inherently less reliable' for an Alder vs Willow Flycatcher.... Yes, you point out challenges but I find these less daunting than the visual ones. Nothing ever works perfectly. But in the end, the question is only this: can I identify the bird with high confidence? Confidence sufficiently...
