Thanks everyone, I'm not usually big on pictures that don't incorporate the whole subject but I thought this turned out pretty well.

    My morning in Congaree NP

I'm originally from Texas too and grew up around them. My dad used to tell me a story about how one chased him away from his favorite fishing spot when he was a kid. The aggressivenes of this snake is legendary however to me it seemed more like he wanted to get a closer look at me more than...

    My morning in Congaree NP

Had a good time out this morning even though I didn't get much birding done. Ran into a group of Wild Turkeys, a possum, and a Cottonmouth which I thought was a banded water snake until it started to slither towards me and run me out of its territory, lol. Here's my amazing picture of the Wild...

I was surprised to find that there's a large group of them that have taken up residence here in South Carolina. I remember my first encounter with a goose when I was a kid. I was fishing and got a little too close to it. It reminded me quickly to leave when it hissed and tried to peck me, lol.

Rose- I believe you are correct, my id guide didn't list the hairy as being in south Carolina for some reason. Thanks for the help, I'm still learning this whole id thing.

Thanks everyone! It was one of those "right place, right time" kind of pictures. I was actually looking for woodpeckers and he just flew right down and sat on that tree for me. A few minutes after he flew off a rabbit came out and started sniffing around, I wonder if the Owl came back...

    Newish to birding

Good for you! My father had a stroke in 2002 and lost use of his left leg and arm but is now able to walk around pretty well. He isn't able to hike like he used to but he sure does appreciate the things he can do a lot more and so do I. Glad to hear that you are still enjoying the things you love.

    Just moved here!

Well, I managed to make it out to Congaree by about 6am and heard TONS of birds including several woodpeckers. However I had absolutely ZERO luck seeing any. I must admit my intentions were to look for waterfowl, especially wood ducks so I didn't really try to find most of the birds I heard. But...

Thanks KC, will do! I'm planning on getting up early in the morning and heading down to Congaree National Park for some birdwatching. Got my photography setup already and everything! Now I just have to follow through on the waking up early part...
