New to birding and of course looking at Binos, Are MHG 8X42 overkill?

Ah, I see now that the original poster already made their choice, and my previous post is now somewhat useless. Still, let it still be a warning that binoculars are addictive, and can easily lead to a serious case of gear-craziness!

New to birding and of course looking at Binos, Are MHG 8X42 overkill?

Hi! I think both Nikon bins will serve you well. My first bin was an 8x42 Nikon Monarch 7, and I still use it at times, even though I also own high-end Swarovski and Zeiss bins, as well as several Canon Image Stabilized (IS) binoculars. Some plusses for the Nikon M7: not only does it have...

Mid-price binoculars with good build quality?

What about Nikon Monarch 7 10x42? Also a solid performer. HN

Why Aren't the Image Stabilization Binos More Popular?

Most IS bins work by simply pushing a button. This isn't more complicated than operating the focus wheel or adjusting the IPD on a regular binocular. I think it's time to dispel the myth that IS bins are a complicated affair. HN

Why Aren't the Image Stabilization Binos More Popular?

The "market" cannot want to buy something if it doesn't know it exists or doesn't know the benefits of having it. Strictly speaking, it's a question of good marketing. :smoke: HN

Nah, I understood your sarcasm perfectly well, I was just too lazy to answer the original poster. ;) HN

Why Aren't the Image Stabilization Binos More Popular?

Actually, I find the 10x42L works rather well even without the batteries, due to the heft of the extra weight and good balance. :t: HN

Why Aren't the Image Stabilization Binos More Popular?

If Canon managed to make an IS binocular with the ergonomics and handling of a non-IS Zeiss, Swarovski or Leica, as well as a decent enough warranty, all the other alpha-bin makers would be forced to close up shop! ;) HN *Proud Canon 10x42L IS WP and Canon 15x50 IS UD owner*

    Cannon IS Storage Practices

I store my Canon IS bins horisontally, as a rule, but haven't noticed any negative effects by storing them vertically.

    Bird or Bino?

I'd say 50/50. The interest in optics also feeds into my other hobbies, like astronomy and target shooting. So, that might make it a 75/25? 8-P

    10X42L IS Pros/cons...

Well, now I can also count myself as a happy Canon 10x42L owner! ;) I had the fortune of passing through London a couple of months ago and got a good deal on one due to the collapsing pound. I immediately took them on a trip to Ethiopia, and I must say; it was wonderful watching those...

    Got the 15x50 IS!

I found the 18x to have a bit too short eye relief and requiring a bit too careful eye placement for my liking. CA was also more apparent in the 18x vs the 15x. HN

    Got the 15x50 IS!

No hinge on this one Troubie! ;) HN

    Got the 15x50 IS!

Let me make a wild, uneducated guess here about which binocular you think would be better for terrestrial; the Swarovski Swarovision 10x50 EL SV? |:D| Anyway, I bought the Canon 15x50 primarily for astronomy and terrestrial viewing secondarily. If it were the other way around, I would have...

    Got the 15x50 IS!

Thanks Binastro! We do have nautical twilight in the south, and I'm staying here a few more days, so hope to get some good observations of the Moon and Jupiter at least! ;) HN
