Keang Krachan NP or Khao Yai NP in early Dec

For Kaeng Krachan definitely go to Baan Maka and book a guide, they have a few on the books at different rates. We like Piak, though he can’t speak English except for bird names. It is great for birds from dawn till around 10 am, but unless the road opens up or you enjoy blinds, it is not so...

    What are these birds?

I’d have gone with a munia, scaly breasted fits the low quality photos. I’m assuming the nice pics are from a website.

    Pala-u waterfall, Kaeng Krachan

Hi, I’m planning to take my family to Kaeng Krachan in July for some very light birding/nature watching. Our original plan was Bang Kran as that’s what I know and love (walking around there is sufficiently good birding for this trip - non-birders in Thailand for first time), then thought of...

Anyone ever made their own field guide?

I made this book about common birds in Thailand and had great fun doing it. No one has read if though! Birds of Thailand for Visitors by Graeme Sheppard https://itun.es/gb/8Rczbb.l

    DOF with 1.4 and 2.0

Sorry, just reread so to clarify: If you keep aperture constant then yes, dof will change due to changing length. If you allow aperture to change by keeping it wide open, dof will not change.

    DOF with 1.4 and 2.0

Since they also change the f number, dof should be unchanged I think. Graeme

    Olympus 300mm f4

Thanks Dave. I haven't actually had any complaints about the out-of-camera images looking over-sharpened, though I have dialled back pretty much any processing the camera does itself (eg turning off noise reduction, using the Natural setting etc). What I do find is there's no need to add any...

    Olympus 300mm f4

It is indeed possible to get great detail with the combo, but I think that particular photo looks over sharpened. Here's one of mine with no post processing (pretty sure, except a crop) https://flic.kr/p/GtCyvT I highly recommend them! (A lot of money, though)

Is this a good focus system

I've got an EM-1 with the new 300mm Pro lens snd I find BIF harder than I did with a Canon 7D and 400mm lens. Doable, but tougher to get first focus. It doesn't bother me as I'm not so bothered about BIF, which should also tell you I'm not experienced with it either.

    Olympus 300mm f4

This may be interest to other amateur photographers like me. Maybe not. I went for a walk in the park and saw a lovely Yellow Bittern in the lake. Being far off and a fairly small bird, it was not easy to get a clear photo but with the EM-1 and 300mm PRO lens I had a fighting chance. I'll post...

    Olympus 300mm f4

Niels, I know what you mean - that looks like an amazing option with early reports suggesting the only significant negative is the f number. Forgot to mention it in my list. But wow, what a range of options we have these days, and no one can say any of the main ones are bad! Just different...

    Shooting in RAW

That does sound like a nice, clean workflow, Andrea and in many ways superior to mine. But I've decided to compromise in some ways, and gain speed/time (for me it's never been about the disk space, I have oodles of it). Now I think about it, my change in attitude came when I switched from my...

    Color Balance

The warmer colour balance is certainly warmer than real life in the cool light of day, but hey, that's personal preference. Personally I would dial it back as the old version looks just like my pics of the same bird. I'm viewing on a Macbook Pro, if that helps.
