HELP Stop the selling of mist nets on ebay!!!

Thanks Jos. I had no idea about this issue. I read a little about illegal bird hunting in the Mediterranean - it sounds terrible.

HELP Stop the selling of mist nets on ebay!!!

Interesting thread. I am probably naive but I don't really understand how mist nets are being used illegally? i.e. in the northern hemisphere what kind of poachers are interested in songbirds? From my understanding mistnets are too fragile to catch anything larger?

    Albertan Birds

Nice picture, and thanks for the shrike info! I haven't had too much trouble seeing White-throated, there are quite a few in Whitemud Ravine and the river valley trails. But I went out looking for snowy owls last winter and had no luck whatsoever, even when other birders were reporting...

    Albertan Birds

Interesting, silverwolf! (and frustrating, no doubt...) I know what you mean; some supposedly common species aren't so common, or vary from year to year or don't show up in the areas you bird. I saw a blue jay the other day for the first time in about a year. Does Europe have other shrikes?

    Albertan Birds

They are not uncommon in the Edmonton area (where Adam saw this one - beautiful picture by the way!). There have been a few sightings lately. I don't remember when they usually appear; I have only seen them in midwinter. I don't know enough about the geese to comment.

    Calgary/Banff next week

Wow, James, that's pretty great for this time of year, especially the warblers. The Townsend's solitaire is not so common either. Thank you for the informative report! Maggie

Some photos of Birds Banded, Saint Joseph, Missouri

Thank you for keeping the names separate Larry, it was a nice challenge to identify the birds! Beautiful birds and photos. Maggie

You are more than welcome, I hope you enjoy the trip! It should be a nice time to go, past high tourist season and beautiful fall colours hopefully. Cheers, Maggie

    Calgary/Banff next week

I believe Johnston Canyon is another nice short hike (has chimney swifts if I remember correctly) near the town of Banff. Also if you take the gondola up the mountain (easily accessible from "downtown" Banff), you can walk around and perhaps see some species that like higher elevations. (I...

Can anyone identify this wild bird ?

Yes, it is best to put it outside (as long as there are no cats or dogs in your yard) where it can fly away if it is recovered. If it still doesn't fly away, it may be more seriously injured. In either case it may be helpful to call a rehabilitator, describe the behavior. They will be able to...
