Kibbled peanuts are expensive. How can I try and make them from whole peanuts

If kibbled is the same as smashed (looks it, from a quick run down google images!), try crushing them in bulk rather than grinding them with a pestle and mortar or mincing them in a blender. If your bird peanuts came in a big clear plastic bag like they usually do, tip about half out into a...

    Mediterranean Gull? Frampton Marsh

Just to come back to update those who helped with advice on this thread, now I've received the binos and taken them for their first day out. I got along really well with them - no problems, no damage the seller hadn't mentioned or collimation problems they hadn't checked for, just really good...

How do you carry your binoculars?

I read this thread with interest while waiting for my binoculars to arrive, wondering which method I'd end up choosing once I had a pair to carry, hah! When they got here, the original strap had a surprisingly horrible design feature - oversized sharp plastic fake-leather patches sewn on where...

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

Some more for the Life List for me today, Little Gulls and a Red-crested Pochard, plus an actual clear view of a Mediterranean Gull, to replace that dubious one I only found in my photos later - that can be officially on my list now!

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

Wow, that photo of the Goosander with allll the chicks is amazing, what a brilliant sighting to have as your life list entry! My most recent life-list addition is actually a bird I saw six years ago - I know, I know, I feel bad for ignoring the poor thing all this time! I'd taken the pictures...

    Springwatch 2024

I do enjoy Springwatch, as well as Autumnwatch/Winterwatch. Again, not sure why it's seen as a negative thing, what's wrong with having an hour of seasonal UK nature on freeview tv, showing people things they might never have seen before - whether that's species they didn't even know we had to...

    Ebird moved my checklists?

Yeah, moving them back would satisfy me for having them in the right place at least, just a shame cos I was trying to be helpful and get what's a locally fairly popular place onto the map for other users too. It wouldn't be worth a complaint, just a explanation much like I wrote here to show...

Beautiful feather, which bird? Thank you 😁

The colours were looking kind of Egyptian Goose to me, do you have those over in Herts? Pretty common in mid Norfolk now but not sure how far they spread. There's some really similar looking ones on Featherbase's Egyptian Goose page and looks like could be a match (check image 14771)

    Ebird moved my checklists?

This is a bit of an odd one, I just noticed that Ebird's moved some of my checklists to a different but nearby location. Full backstory on this (not interesting, but to explain the situation) I originally filled in two checklists using an existing hotspot which was a bit vague in title - the...

How many cuckoos have you seen?

I think I should write that I rarely see a bird species more often, cos within days of typing this out I was spending some quality time watching cuckoos calling and zooming around tree to tree and back and forth over a river, at a local spot for me. Been there dozens of times and only ever heard...

    Mediterranean Gull? Frampton Marsh

Thanks for the advice (both the quoted poster, and those before), and I much appreciate the kind delivery and not being judged for not being able to invest in top - or even middling! - quality kit. I'm convinced by the 'any binoculars are better than none' philosophy, and trusting the choices...

    Mediterranean Gull? Frampton Marsh

Yeah, I don't have two or three hundred in spare cash, and likely never will. No matter how much use I'd get out of it, or how long it'd last me, all the perfectly logical reasons to invest in kit are meaningless when I just don't have anywhere near that level of disposable income to use. It's...

    Mediterranean Gull? Frampton Marsh

"This last comment could be incorrect, as I may be misinterpreting the OP" No, you've got it right there - I was taking the photo for a duck much closer to me, and was aware of there being gulls in the background but not paying them any attention. It wasn't even an 'I'll take a photo of all...

    Mediterranean Gull? Frampton Marsh

I think the head is facing to the left and slightly down, the bill being the point which overlaps into the wing? And the head does look blacker than the brown on the others here (the sun was behind me at this point in the day, and it was getting overcast, so I don't think it's a misleading...
