Thanks Phil. A couple of notes from Sunday. I was in the Avocet hide when the birder next to me alerted me to a plover flying left to right (and angled slightly towards the hide). I soon got on the bird and it was obviously a 'ringed' type. As it drew level with the sewage works behind, it...

Thanks for taking time to explain a difficult but well considered thought process - I believe this has resulted in the right conclusion.

We all love birdwatching, and often for differing reasons. For me I love to find out the context of various sightings (be they common or rare), and your stats hit the mark for Upton Warren! Cheers Phil B (:B

Must check my notebooks, I'm sure I've seen Wigeon on more than one occasion in Worcs, unless I'm misidentifying all the American Wigeons I must be seeing ;);)

Thanks Phil (or should that be Statto) for a wonderful run through of the 2016 UW highlights - what a good year it was. Also a word of thanks to the wardens and work party attendees for doing such a great job. May 2017 bring all of you more birds (and cakes).

Glad it was "just as the bird was leaving" rather than "just after the bird left".

Brief visit early pm. Sandwich Tern seen on posts & shore on north east side of Camp Lane Pits. Seen at 2:45pm just as I was leaving. Poor phone scope photo, but you can tell what it is!

Called into Camp Lane Pits Sat pm (yesterday) between showers. Not much bird news of note, but loads of Black Tailed Skimmers. Inc one fresh emerged individual (still had glistening wings) which fell prey to a Pied Wagtail. The bird flew up from the causeway and caught the dragonfly in flight...

Willow Warblers: What do folks think of Willow Warbler numbers this year ? I get out and about quite a bit in locations I'd expect WWs, but this year I've not heard/seen as many. What are numbers like for you ?

    Dowles Brook, Wyre Forest

9th May: Redstart (heard 3 but only saw 1 - quite tricky this year), Pied Fly (5+ - much better than a few years ago when PF was the tricky one to pin down), Spotted Fly (2, inc 1 from meadow), Wood Warbler (5+), Tree Pipit (4), Cuckoo, Dipper (2), Grey Wagtail plus usual other warblers etc.

Hobby 4, Common Tern 3, LRP 2, Redshank 2, Oystercatcher 2, Lapwing 6, Cuckoo h/o, Sand Martin c50, Yellow Wagtail 1, Sedge Warbler and a Hornet. The hobbies were feeding over the field on the west side of Camp Lane Pits, flying low over the low crop and close to the footpath. Magnificent!
