    Camera Conundrum

For the purpose of a blog, you can do a lot with a Nikon Z50 and the 50-250 kit lens. The effective focal length is 375mm at the long end. I use a Z6 (full frame) with a 300mm lens and a 1.4 teleconverter. The effective focal length is around 420mm - not much more. One tip is to program a...

    cleaning camera and bins

Don't use any ammonia based window cleaner like Windex. It might be okay, but it is not appropriate for polycarbonate lenses or filters or some coatings. Don't take a chance. Plain water is fine. Zeiss wipes are excellent and I carry them in all my camera bags.

Is it true that Nikon are in financial trouble?

Nobody directly addressed your question. Nikon is doing fine and many of the negative comments are from influencers that can't read a financial statement. Nikon has increased their financial forecast of sales and profit for six consecutive quarters and have been profitable every year but one...

Nikon 800MM PF Lens anyone yet..?

It's been a while since I posted here, but I've had the 800mm PF since May and use it regularly on the Z7ii. It's everything you could want - light weight, very sharp, and easy to handhold. I've carried the lens and shot continuously on hikes of over 5 miles in 90 degree heat. I've also used...

    Flash Photographs of birds

Thanks, Mike - I have the MagMod Wildlife Kit and the basic diffuser. It's a good system.

    Animal Eye Detection

I've got over 1000 photos using Animal Eye Detect for German Shepherds and similar dogs. It's near perfect even with a profile if the eye is well defined and contrasty. If the subject has a brindle coat, it really struggles and my hit rate was near zero. Overall I'd consider it successful -...

    Flash Photographs of birds

They look very well done. That's the right use of flash. Which flash and extender were you using?

Nikon Z6ii for birding with FTZ adaptor

I have a Z6 and Z7II. I don't find Eye AF to be any better than other modes. I've had some subjects where Animal Eye AF will work, but others where it does not work at all. I've got much more consistent results with the Wide Large and Wide Small modes. All these cameras require a well...

    Nikon back button AF

I think Steve Perry and some others had a similar approach. One version allows you to switch to Single when the button is held continuously, and when you lift your finger it reverts to D-25 or your current choice. I don't recall which button was programmed.

    Nikon back button AF

There are several versions of that approach. Steve Perry has a good YouTube video on BBF and how to set it up. The new Z cameras don't offer the same options right now, but they are even easier to change modes.

    New USA Nikon D6 anyone..?

Have you applied for NPS membership? You have enough top gear to qualify. It's based on points depending on the gear you have. NPS members normally get priority on new gear so the retail shop gets an additional allocation for NPS members above it's normal stock. The process is easy and good...

    nikon macro lens

The standard macro focal length is around 100mm. That includes everything from 85mm to 105mm. This focal length has a nice blend of working distance and room to back up if needed. This focal length is good for travel and a wide range of subjects. My bread and butter macro lens is the Nikon...

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

Hermann - I think you nailed it. The D780 is a very nice update in a lot of areas for a D750 wedding, event or portrait photographer. They don't need the resolution of the D850, they need two cameras and dual cards, and the D780 provides almost everything you have in a Z6 except the EVF and...

    Nikon D780

The D780 looks pretty good to me. There are a lot of updates to the D750 which make the D780 a regular resolution alternative to complement the D850 for high resolution. So here is the list of upgrades and updates: Newer sensor Faster focus New EXPEED processor Faster shutter Better weather...

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

Why not just update the Nikon 1 series as a small format camera. There are existing lenses that are pretty good. Update the body and the software and it would cover the "small format" market for mirrorless. All the things you can do with a 4/3 sensor you can do with a Nikon 1. The 70-300...
