    Also depends on the contrast of the subject as to whether the AF will lock on and also the speed of movement if any. When working with badgers I find the AF is pretty much useless even when the animals are lit by a lamp and I go to manual focus and rely on the focus beep for confirmation. It...

    Canon 100-400L lense + x2 converter

    1-4IS with 1.4x to me if iffy if you want larger than A4 prints. 1-4IS with 2x okay for landscape and macroshots using manual focus but I wouldn't be confident they could go larger than A4. It really depends on what is acceptable sharpness to you. P

    To report back I final went for the 300mm 2.8 IS (480mm on the digital body) so close to what George recommended. still with option for 1.4 and 2x tc retaining AF as well and cheaper option plus lighter. Loving the results from the lens after just a few outings and some of my results can be seen...

    Christine Perhaps a printout is the best way to compare optical and digital zoom effects. if you get a decent pic using digital zoom as well as optical then your laughing, Was it taken through the scope as well. Cheers P
