    New Vortex travel scope

This is an interesting development. I’m not a fan of zooms on small scopes, so a removeable eyepiece is hopeful. From the video on the Vortex website it looks like a different connection to other Razor scopes (bad). It looks like a simple screw collar arrangement (good?), which may potentially...

    Pocket alpha binocs. What?

“My dream would be a "beefed-up" 7x20 Nikon with the level of quality of the Bushnell and the ease of use of the CF III.” I’m also a fan of small reverse porros for usability over double-hinged compacts. Every bin involves compromise - i’ve recently accepted some in the form of a pair of...

Vortex Razor HD 50 : any other eyepieces? (from Vortex or other brand, Swarovski, Opticron, ...)

The parts diagram you link to above, and davem’s comment suggest the eyepiece has a screw thread. If that’s the case, it may be possible to adapt threaded eyepieces from other manufacturers using an adapter ring. For this to work the eyepiece socket of the vortex scope would need to be...

50-55mm straight scope for 1.25” eyepieces

Thought I'd post a link to this fairly old thread in the Nikon forum https://www.birdforum.net/threads/adapting-1-25-astronomy-eyepieces-to-the-nikon-ed50.322702/ Seems like you can adapt some Astro eyepieces to a Nikon ED50 if they have a removable barrel, as Jring says. I did try going down...

    Quick release question

Thanks both for your replies, it looks like a screw-type clamp is the way to go. Its often not clear (to me) which heads have secondary safety catches from looking at manufacturers websites. If i were looking for a basic (no frills) but decent pan-and-tilt head for a 1.2kg scope with a safety...

    Quick release question

I tend to carry my scope / tripod on my back using a mulepack, but i'm constantly worried that the quick release mechanism on the tripod head will catch on something and disengage. Am i being paranoid? What head do you use? I'm ideally looking for something with a 2-stage quick release...

Opticron Imagic 8x25 Vs BGA T PC 8x24

Thanks both for your replies. There is quite a size difference - I found a 8x24 BGA T going for £110, which seemed like a good deal, so ordered it.

Opticron Imagic 8x25 Vs BGA T PC 8x24

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me. I'm looking for a decent compact roof in the 8x25 range, and have narrowed my choice down to: Imagic BGA Oasis 8x25 (discontinued last year but still in shops), and BGA T PC Oasis 8x24 Looking at the specs, they are both Phase-corrected with Oasis...

    Tripod for Kowa TSN 601?

njlarsen - Feisol also do a 3442 (identical to 3342 but 4-section legs), which I reckon should be <60cm with head, or a range of traveller tripods - e.g. CT-3441S, which I think would be ~50cm with head. http://www.feisol.com/ Benro also do some nice stuff - e.g. TRCB069 which has reverse...

    Tripod for Kowa TSN 601?

Thanks for your replies. In the end I found a good deal on a Velbon CF 535 + PH-157Q head - total 1.8Kg. Fawkesey - I like the look of Feisol, and had previously considered Benro (the other Gitzo clone) - but I reckon the combo you suggested, although very light, would be twice the cost of my...

    Tripod for Kowa TSN 601?

Hi, I'm looking to put together a lightweight package for reasonably long distance walking. I've got a Kowa TSN 601 (750g, Angled) which I'll be using at 30x. I'm 5'8", so height not a major consideration. Can I get away with something really lightweight like a Velbon CF 435 (1kg), or do I...

    GS 665 or non-ed HR66?

Rob, Martin, Thank you both for your comments - in the end I managed to find an ED version of the HR66 going for not very much more money, so decided to go with that instead, thanks again, Dunder

    GS 665 or non-ed HR66?

Rob, Thanks - although its the dual focussing thats putting me off the GS665 - I've heard it can be 'fiddly' Dunder

    GS 665 or non-ed HR66?

Hi, I've been looking at the GS665, but have found somewhere I can get a secondhand, non-ed HR66 plus an old version (Rubber eyecup) HDF eyepiece for about the same price. Which shoud I go for? Many thanks, Dunder

HDF vs SDL zoom, help please.

Without wanting to hijack your thread - can you tell me why you opted for the GS rather than the ES? Personally I'd go with a fixed EP - I prefer the wider FOV and less 'fussing' with zooms.
