Bringing back the Great Auk part 2

Looks like my idea of bringing back the Great Auk (see below) http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=255539 is being seriously considered: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/2016/08/19/plot-hatched-to-reintroduce-extinct-great-auk-to-british-shores/ An added bonus is that they are...

Teesmouth Bird Club planning to build a steel tower platform/hide at Dorman's Pool

If its as good as the one at Minsmere, this is an extremely good idea

    Durham Birding

The immature WTE was present just to the east of Westgate at 5.45 this evening, but was mobbed by crows, jackdaws and a buzzard and then flew east over Eastgate. Almost flew over our heads at one point. I met some locals at Stanhope who believe the bird roosts elsewhere (best not to say where)...

    Durham Birding

I am going to try tomorrow, though the weather doesn't look promising. I saw one in mid-Lincolnshire a few years ago: trying to see it down in the valley where it was roosting was impossible (unless you knew the exact tree it was roosting in) but once I got onto higher ground I eventually saw it...

    Durham Birding

Does anyone have any useful info on the WT Eagle at Eastgate? Any thoughts on where it might be roosting or best viewed from? Which quarry are the reports talking about, as there are several quarries in the Eastgate area? DBC site seems to be down, and there is no forum on it anyway.

    Living on the Headland

There are several local birders that live on the Headland. It seems friendly enough, no one seems to hassle you when you are birding in the area, even when you are peering into back gardens with binoculars - i assume the locals all know what's going on as there are so many migrant sightings...

Is Cowpen Marsh actually an RSPB reserve?

It is owned by a chemical company, but the RSPB have a 10 year lease on the land that allows them to manage the site for wildlife

    Durham Birding

There were originally 3 other posts above explaining what I thought about the Dipper but some genius removed them, leaving a very misleading idea about what I thought. The problem with seeing this bird is that the light is always poor in the Dene so the bird always looks dark, especially when...

    Durham Birding

Originally there were 3 other posts that showed that the bird is clearly a UK bird with much reddish-brown, but they have now been removed. The above post is now completely misleading and incorrect. I will post some more photos which show its clearly reddish-brown nature when I am allowed -...

    Durham Birding

I caught up with the Castle Eden Dene Dipper again this afternoon (2pm). At first it was difficult to find, but I eventually found it. Initially it was quite skittish and only showed briefly. Initial views showed it to be very dark-bellied, especially when seen through binoculars at medium...

    Durham Birding

Looking at Ian's photos and my own again, and comparing them with those of the Thetford bird(s) there appears to be very little difference - possibly the brown is slightly more extensive on the Castle Eden bird (especially on the sides). It would seem that nominate cinclus can show a narrow band...

    Durham Birding

The photos of the Dipper are a bit blurry - low light, rain and distance - but I think the reddish-brown is evident (when enlarged)
