    Hoopoe in Northern Ireland

Great pics of a truly funky-looking bird! Congrats! Between the goofy crest and the striped/checkered wings it’s a winged wonder.

    Bully robin!!

A better response to the ‘little brown birds’ (probably House Sparrows, a non-native species)would be to remove all the nesting material as soon as you find it, as long as there are no eggs, until the Bluebirds make up their minds. Jos has it right that the Robins are protected and it is...

    Florida, Egret

I had to go to Huntington Beach CA to see one. I lived in Jacksonville FL for a year and looked and looked. Wildly entertaining to watch.

Red-eared sliders are opportunistic predatory omnivores rather than herbivores

The pond they were in has no aquatic vegetation at all. Plenty of Mosquitofish and small Koi. As for the Alligator snapper, it probably wouldn’t have survived the Winter. Devoured almost everything in the meantime though!

Poll - Do you agree or disagree with the AOS's recent decision to abandon the use of eponymous bird names?

Last night, while reading Mysticete’s latest post, a question popped into my head that I hadn’t thought important before. Why does this have to change anything in field guides? Since the AOS is a private group, why do the rest of us have to put up with their nonsense? They can call birds...

Poll - Do you agree or disagree with the AOS's recent decision to abandon the use of eponymous bird names?

The petition here is essentially moot. The committee has met, discussed and come to a conclusion. The names will change, there might be some public input and comments and that’s that. Watch and see what’s next.

    Grey Squirrel Picture Great Britain.

The CRISPR technology IS genetic engineering and not chemical. It takes a certain number and probably multiple releases to achieve control. Pricey, but if you want control you gotta do SOMETHING and everything comes at a cost. TANSTAAFL. There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch.

Poll - Do you agree or disagree with the AOS's recent decision to abandon the use of eponymous bird names?

Ah, now I see! Since I’m white, male, heterosexual, over 60, married, and descended from a Quaker from England, my thoughts and existence don’t really matter because they’re so oppressive no one not the same can live a full life as long as I derive any enjoyment of life and my accomplishments...

    bees in hummingbird feeder

Bees are attracted to anything yellow. Hummingbirds prefer red. Try painting it red with fingernail polish.

    UK Invasive Species Survey

I get shot down for advocating the same thing Paul. Just like Mono, so many people are aghast that it be suggested that having fewer children would make a huge impact on planetary environmental health. They go immediately to China’s forced one child program. Great idea, restricting population...
