    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

Have you tried the ATC? I never had any problems with a "rotating" ATC - just fix the screw properly. And for my ATX85 I use the Gitzo GHF2W, the plate has also no "safety pin" - no problems whatsoever.

Handbook of Western Palearctic Birds vs. Birds of the Western Palearctic Concise Edition

Just to clarify - the objectives of the two books are totally different: Snow & Perrins is the summary ("concise edition") of the opus magnum of British ornithology "Handbook of the Birds of Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa: The Birds of the Western Palearctic" published between 1977 -...

    Swarovski ATC: which lightweight tripod?

Interesting handicraft work. But I wonder if a decent tightening of the screw of the exchange plate would not have been enough. That was the case for me: six months ago, I screwed the exchangeable plate on very tightly and have had no problems with my ATC since then. But maybe it's because I...

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

For the ATC I use the Fluid Head MVH400AH from Manfrotto This combination works quite well, but also has some limitations: Pros: Small and lightweight, "Made in Italy". The folding function of the Gitzo 1545 is kept Inexpensive (last year I paid 50 EUR). Cons: The mechanics feel a bit...

Trying different scopes and how to compare them.

My favorite testing chart is the Swedish 20 Kronor Bill with Astrid Lindgren: Link to riksbank with a lot of microtext. (Try to read the text in Astrid's hair with your naked eyes...)

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

ATC - First Impressions: Two things struck me first about Swarovski's new ATC spotting scope: First, how small the ATC is compared to the ATX85 (my wife's comment was "how cute!"). Second, that at no point do you feel like you're looking through a mini spotting scope. The viewing behavior is...

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

Thank you for these interesting impressions! What comes to my mind: The ATC is the perfect companion for "Low-Carbon Birding" because you don't need a car for transport but you could use a bicycle or public transport. The subject is more topical than ever (and, btw., the book by Javier CaletrĂo...

    New ATC/ STC 17-40x56 Telescope

    - Have you tried the foot? If you tighten the mounting screw properly, is there any movement of the scope? - If i understand correctly, the eyepiece is a carryover from the ATX series. Were you able to confirm the very good viewing characteristics (especially for eyeglass wearers) with the ATC...

    Swarovski ATC: which lightweight tripod?

Fully agree with Hermann. Never had an issue with rotating scopes - with or without anti-rotation-pin. If you are really one of the more cautious ones, the following life hack might be something for you: With one look you can see if the screw has loosened. Kind regards, Toni

    Swarovski ATC: which lightweight tripod?

Removing the centre column is a good idea to reduce the weight even further. But I haven't done that yet because it also has disadvantages. I think that without the centre column you lose the flexibility of being able to increase the height without problems. Furthermore, the packing principle of...

    Swarovski ATC: which lightweight tripod?

The Gitzo 1545 works perfect with the small video head MVH400AH by Manfrotto and the tripod can be packed just as compact as with the ball head. The video head has a weight of 305g without handle and plate - the handle is way too big for the head and weighs 80g - that's the first thing to be...
