Yellow-crowned Night Heron
The large eyes are well adapted for its nocturnal habits. Taken from a photo blind, there were two or three of these night-herons hiding in a wooded swampy section of the Arroyo Colorado. The large swollen bill is specialized for eating crabs. Six subspecies are recognized. This is the nominate eastern race characterized by darker coloration, broader dorsal streaks and having a thinner bill.
