Lesser Antillean Iguana (Iguana delicatissima)

This relic from the past was basking on a rock. Now very rare and critically endangered, they suffer from hunting pressure (although legally protected), introduced predators and hybridization and competition with invasive Green Iguanas. It has disappeared from most of its native islands and attempts at captive breeding have been only marginally successful. It is distinguished from the similar Green Iguana by its shorter snout, large ivory head scales and lack of an enlarged ear scale. This is an adult male showing pink jowls and bluish eye scales.
