Likes to keep hidden except when singing, and probably not easy to see even then. Not a tremendously active bird. The White-naped Brushfinch moves, or hops, around on the ground looking on , or under, leaves they find on the ground as they look for food. They also look for food on brush close to the ground.

Easily mistaken for the [[Groove-billed Ani]] (''Crotophaga sulcirostris'') in the area of overlap. They eat a variety of seeds and insects which are to be found on or near the ground.  And may be found hopping on the ground following swarms of army ants.

==Breeding==

This species uses various dry vegetable materials to build a nest without a top covering and lines it with additional material more suited to cushioning. It's placed around a half meter to as much as 3 meters above ground in heavier brush or occasionally on the earth. The clutch generally consists of two to three white eggs. Times of this process vary from April to September depending on the location they are found.

Identification

Overall black with a faint bluish iridescence on neck, wings and tail, and a strong, vaguely parrot-like bill.

Tail is long and rounded, and the flight looks weak with rapid wing-beats alternating with glides.

Similar Species

Easily mistaken for the Groove-billed Ani (Crotophaga sulcirostris) in the area of overlap. The Smooth-billed is slightly larger and its bill has a more arched culmen (esp. noticeable at basal part of culmen, where downward curve towards forehead is stronger than in Groove-billed) and no grooves in the upper mandible. They can also be separated by the voice.

Confusion also possible with the Greater Ani, which is larger, longer-tailed, longer-billed, has a more iridescent plumage and yellow eyes (careful; juv. Greater Ani with reduced iridescence and dark eyes similar to those of the Smooth-billed).
