Unknown call, Ochil Hills, Scotland (1 Viewer)

Hello

Odd call I couldnt identiry yesterday morning while in the Ochil Hills. Calling from a dense conifer plantation about 200+m away. It's the plaintive call in the background behind the noise of the burn and the jays. Apologies for the terrible recording but taken on my phone.

And there is also a Willow Warbler and a Wren (?)

Definitely not a bullfinch, far too loud and carrying.

thanks! Thats one of the problems of ID of sounds at least for me.

Similar calls that came into my mind (although not a perfect fit, yes the usual reasons) are

• a vagrant Scops Owl (although they have longer intervalls between single notes, regular/ often?)
• Common Midwife Toad, which shouldnt occur in Scotland (are Amphibien sounds far carrying? Oh yes, I can epand that later)

Frequency is too low ~1.75KHz too

Yes, a slightly haunting plaintive note?
If I had to attribute it to a genus, I’d go with Thrushes, but beyond that….😮

It gave me thrush vibes too, and the voume would support that. Just doesn't sound like any thrush I know!

This is most likely a Jay.
Especially during the breeding season they imitate other species, including Scops Owl:

That makes sense, a jay had just flown over sounding like a buzzard. I'd forgotten about them and their bizarre repertoir. Thanks!
