Help with a bird sighting. (1 Viewer)

Hello, wonder if someone can help. I was out today walking the dog near a small pool in the Alsager area(South Cheshire). I saw a heron on the opposite bank, only 20 metres or so away. When we got close it took off but I had a great, close view for several seconds. It didn't seem to me to be a usual Grey Heron. I used to do a little twitching as a kid and I know a Grey Heron when I see one. What are the chances of sighting a Purple Heron in these parts? It had a definite brown tone to the neck instead of the white/grey and the beak was more orange. Definitely something different about it. Sadly didn't get a pic. Is it possible?
