Garden / Yard List 2024 (2 Viewers)

At this morning:

#48. Willow Warbler - at least 2 birds singing in garden (or neighbors garden)
#49. Black-throated Diver - Flock of 19 fly over heading NE
#50. White-fronted Goose - few in flock of Barnacles heading NE. Flock of B-Geese goes like every 10 or 15 minutes

So the Arctic Migration has started with it's full force. Sadly I have to go working trip for next 9 days.

Goldcrest finally chirped up yesterday afternoon and I didn't realise I hadn't recorded it for the garden this year. It used to be a January bird but the Leylandii hedge at the end of our terrace has been chopped down: Coal Tit is another loser from that.

61. Goldcrest 13/5

I heard a juvenile Tawny Owl begging yesterday evening so they are breeding nearby (and having registered it I realised I'd been hearing and ignoring it for at least two or three days - whoops!)

Swapped my old mill in Suffolk for an old mill near Bath last night. Very similar birds, including Grey Wagtail but also Sand Martins which are quite a scarce visitor back home.

Before we left home on Monday morning, there was a begging Tawny Owl calling around 09:00 in the nice grounds of the hotel across the road. Makes sense that I’ve heard Tawny Owl more this year than the last couple, I presume they have bred very close to our place. (But naturally not in the Owl box I put up)

Back on 10 May, I had time to get out early in the morning to see what was happening. The end result included 5 new year additions and a big splash of color in the yard.

79. Western Tanager
80. Barn Swallow
81. Brown-crested Flycatcher
82. Black-headed Grosbeak
83. Blue Grosbeak (2nd yard record all-time)

Tanager and grosbeak photos below, with quality a bit to be desired.
