Trying to book a car for a week in September and getting nowhere fast. Anyone any recommendations for local hire? I am resigned to paying for a taxi from the airport to the resort.

I've rented in Greece on the spur of the moment, it's very easy but if you want something straight away from the airport, better to do it online.

Go with a known hire car company. There are plenty of offices in the airport. When we were there last year I was recommended a "local" by the person handling our villa booking. The car turned out to be a nightmare & I told them to take it back after 2 days. Ended up rebooking a car through the local Hertz office. A bit more expensive but at least we survived the holiday in it

I have always found Horeftakis Tours and car rentals at Kissamos very reliable. www.horeftakistours.com/rentacar.html dial number ending in 888 you should get Haris direct. He will have cars waiting at both Heraklion and Chania airports.
