Quite a few at farlington, and at least four at fishtail lagoon, keyhaven last week.

Hobby and a cuckoo in the same tree at Beaulieu Rd yesterday (first of the year for both) - sounds like I should have gone to acres down.

Farlington pretty quiet today and a chill sea breeze meant I was glad I had my woolly hat! Yellow wagtail, wheatears, and a couple of very close-up LRPs was the best of an otherwise very ordinary trip.

I wheatear and a whinchat at Farlington yesterday, plus sedge warblers everywhere (20+). First little tern of the year too. Spoonbill still there - snoozing. Andrew

Fair selection of birds along Lymington - Keyhaven coastline today, including: Cettis Warbler Spotted Redshank x3 Marsh Harrier Peregrine Eider Water Pipit (lifer surprisingly) Mystery wader which I thought might have been a Ruff (?) but really had me stumped (anyone else see an odd wader at...

Good views of a marsh harrier today down at Keyhaven. That goose still at Normandy mixing it with the Brent. Nice flock of three Bullfinch too. I know they're relatively common, but there's something indefinably exotic about a Bullfinch. Yet to see one in my garden.

Phew! Birding needs characters like her - or does it just attract them ;) Andrew

Normandy - Keyhaven coastline was a joy this Saturday afternoon. Apart from the RB Goose (which was in Normandy Farm field around 4pm) and the Slav grebe (both lifers for me), there were some very friendly people out and about. I particulary liked the aging Joyce Grenfell lookie-likee on her...

30+ avocets and the whooper sort of made up for some pretty hideous weather at Farlington today. Must remember my gloves next time! Andrew

You really don't want to know David - arrived, set up scope and the crake was the first bird I saw as I scanned along the reeds! It was all rather bizarre really. Though not as bizarre as trying to eat my packed lunch - some leftover spag bol - with a biro! (I forgot to take a fork). Trust me...

Tom, David - sorry guys but spotted crake relocated 2ish by (ahem) yours truly, plus a couple of ospreys across the harbour! And at least one curlew sand and a couple of little stints. Magic! Apparently quite a few sightings of Water Rail, but I didn't see any. No sign of the Pectoral either.

Farlington was a joy today! Lots of birders looking for the spotted crake - which remained un-spotted as of 3.30pm. But much else to see on the wader front - little stint, curlew sandpiper - and good raptor coverage with merlin and peregrine making an appearance. First whinchat of the year -...

Nothing showing 07.30-08.30 this morning down at Weston shore - although needles and haystacks did cross my mind while I was down there!

Skatebirder All is not lost - the/a Sabine's gull is still around. It was up the Itchen as far as Bitterne around 15.30 then decided to follow the river back towards the Solent. Surely worth a look back at Woolston this evening/tomorrow morning?

Three Farlington 'firsts' for me today before the drizzle stopped play: redstart, lesser whitethroat, and curlew sandpiper (which I am proud to say I picked out from the Dunlin without assistance!). No wryneck, but the notice board in the hut said one's been about. Next time eh?

Peter, LCE winchester is a good shop, but not for Nikon products unfortunately. I just bought a Nikon ED50 scope from Warehouse Express (body only £200) and can't fault it. Hoping to try it out on the Osprey at LTM with any luck! Andrew

No bluethroats in the New Forest over the weekend, but finally got to see my first Goshawk and hawfinch. I can't believe it's taken me so long to see these species. Very exhilirating to see, especially the hawfinch - you wouldn't want to get into a beak scrap with one of those fellas! Possible...

A very pleasant day around lymington-keyhaven today. In addition to the spoonbill, another odd sighting was what I took to be a rock dove on a post just along from Lymington marina (before you get to Normandy lagoon). It was light on the back and had two obvious dark wing bars. Rock doves don't...

Tawny owls Hi there, If, like me, you find the prospect of wandering around southampton common at dusk with a pair of binoculars in search of tawny owls just a little bit intimidating, try westwood road just behind waitrose on portswood road - saw some great views of a couple of Tawnys there...

RTD still by Northam bridge. From the carpark of Fairway's (right next to the old Meridian studio) you can get some great views - less than 50m away!

Thanks Paul, and what a great use of google map! Just looking at the map again, how old is the satelite image? I scanned west towards testwood lakes and there's no sign of the large lake and the information centre, just a sandy wasteland. Or perhaps I've missed it, and I'm looking in the wrong...

3 Barnacle Geese and a couple of green sandpipers at Lower Test made the 25 min cycle ride kind of worthwhile. What are optimal conditions for seeing water pipit at LT? They usually hang out by the fishing lodge end of the board walk, right? Andrew

Farlington saturday Choosing between Farlington or the Lymington-Keyhaven coastline is never easy but I'm happy to say that Farlington came up trumps this Saturday. To the uninitiated, a large group of men staring at reeds is always going to raise questions - and by 10.30 there was a very large...

Hi Steve, No, missed it this time - didn't go round as far as pennington. Seen ruff there before though. That stretch of coastline really is outstanding. Unsubscribed from hoslist a while back. I can just imagine the tenor of the debate - cats in a bag I bet! andrew

Went for the 'early morning at hengistbury/lunchtime at keyhaven/afternoon at NF' combo in the end. Quite a nice circular route from southampton. Hobby taking a small passerine in flight was a highlight (not for the passerine, obviously) at hengistbury; great views of a dartford warbler and med...
