5 Common Cranes at Welney WWT today. One pair had a young bird with them and were frequently chasing off the other pair. Great to see there's been breeding success in this area of the county. Record shot on my website before long...

Looking back at my notebook the start of September 2009 was strong westerlies. Then we must have had some decent winds, as combined totals from a couple of seawatches produced 20+ Black Terns, 49 Great Skuas, c.30 Arctic Skuas, Balearic Shearwater etc. within the first two weeks. Winds obviously...

Singing birds around West Briggs Wood, and a pair between there and Shouldham Warren (PM me if you want exact grid references etc). I've had other birds nearby too, but never really visited this site before this year, so don't know how they're doing on average. Finally getting to grips with...

    Norfolk birding

Couldn't be bothered with the frustration of trying to twitch something on the coast, so had a really lovely morning in my local area. Starting soon after 4am, the best birds were 3 Cuckoo, 4 Garden Warbler, 5 Woodlark and a Hobby. Also found Great-Spotted Woodpecker and Barn Owl nests, and saw...

What were sightings like tonight please? On BirdGuides it says present at 8:25pm and 8:30pm - may just be two people's reports of the same viewing though.

    Norfolk birding

3 Common Terns, 3 Turtle Doves, 1 male Cuckoo and 1 Common Sandpiper at Denver Sluice - a solid couple of hours this morning. Also good numbers of warblers - is anybody else noticing this? More than last year I'd say; at least 20 Whitethroats holding territory, and 7 Lesser Whitethroats now too.

Thanks for that; very interesting paper. It would be interesting to know whether these birds take a similar migration route back to breeding grounds in the spring, or whether they move North to Europe and then across to Greenland. This would correlate with larger numbers of leucorhoa recorded in...

A friend had a male Greenland Wheatear on some local farmland today. I normally associate Greenland Wheatears with autumn migration more than spring (perhaps incorrectly). Are they regular in Spring too? Thanks

This morning at Denver Sluice: 12 Chiffchaff, 8 Willow Warbler, 10 Blackcap, 6 Sedge Warbler and 5 Whitethroat made up an impressive number of warblers. A Yellow Wagtail went South, and a House Martin was feeding. Also a Nightingale singing along the riverbank, but due to unsuitable habitat it...

Visibility very poor in west Norfolk too, though my brother is on the coast at Holme (near Thornham) and says it's cleared up - to what extent I don't know, but around King's Lynn visibility hasn't really increased at all.

    Norfolk birding

Lesser White-Fronted Goose flew in just after 2pm at Buckenham/Cantley today, remaining at the back near the railway line with the Taigas where we left it after 3pm. It was previously last seen at around 9am when it flew over from the fields to the other side of the railway, so it was a long...
