    Norfolk birding

Some in the hedgerow beyond the windmill on Sluice Road, Denver. Can't remember if there were fewer than previous years though. Pretty much all fruits seem to have taken a hit this year.

No worries, that's fair enough. I'm referring to the Collins and the Advanced Bird ID Guide.

I don't know about the head profile, but I think there's nothing wrong with the bill given that this bird is a female. The black nail is only a requirement for purity in adult males, and having taken a look at photos on Birdguides (including from the breeding range) I don't think the black is...

I'd like to know too (I do have a vested interest though). Surely if there are Pochard genes in there they didn't enter in the bird's recent ancestry?

Good day at Holme today. Highlights included 8 Ring Ouzel, Firecrest and Black Redstart, plus (between 2.30 and 3.30 on the sea) Pom Skua, Manxie and 40+ Kittiwake. Decided to try for better views of the Arctic Warbler after my seawatch... but never made it, thank to a Locustella warbler which...

Stumbled across a Clouded Yellow at Denver Sluice today, along with a day-flying Red Underwing which decided to hitch a lift on my back.

Haven't been keeping up properly with the thread, but I don't think Dave's right - talking to others in the hide it wasn't just me who saw 3 different birds on Friday. I'm confused! :smoke:

Yes, there are definitely three birds.

Thanks Jim. Just to clarify - are you definitely talking about 'the other peep' rather than the 'runt Dunlin'?

Not sure about today, but we had it well during our first visit yesterday (though no sign later on). Where's the discussion got to with this bird?

    Norfolk birding

Succumbed to the lure of Cley yesterday. A string of bad decisions meant we dipped the sandpiper first thing, but unlike some I was able to go back later (bad luck Connor - glad you got it today!). Also had a Pale-bellied Brent in with the flock next to Cley visitor centre, and c.150 Whitefronts...

Sssshhhh, don't give away our Rare Burger Alert idea! I need it in case/when I fail finals!

Thanks David. Probably have a little bit more luck now that I'm not going to be shooting off to the other side of the county instead of revising :t:

Think that's the best photo of that bird I've seen Penny, nice one! Any idea where the Savi's warbler reported by RBA is? It's my last day in Norfolk before I go back to uni (and finals :-C )...

Dunnock x Jack Snipe hybrid anybody?

Hence the old country saying "you can only kiss a girl when gorse is in flower" ;)

    Norfolk birding

Hi Nigel! Simeon and I had one on 24th, a little before 9am, so you might strike lucky. We also had a possible Firecrest (heard only) at the top of the carpark where it meets the field where the Hawfinches usually are. There was a big flock of Siskin (c.100) but it was very mobile so we didn't...

For anyone going past Swaffham way today I had a candidate Rough-legged Buzzard from the A47 dual carriageway just outside the town. Worth keeping an eye open for in my opinion ;)

Thanks for reminding me to watch it Penny :t: However, I am pretty sceptical about Lee's comment at 26:48!

    Norfolk birding

Please could somebody find a mega, because otherwise there's not enough incentive for me to make the trip back from Oxford! I did leave all my bowls, plates, mugs, and cutlery behind, but that's really just a way of justifying myself if I do have to come down for the day ;)

Has this definitely been verified? I saw a post on a birdguides photo which said that it had been making chip calls...

    Norfolk birding

Did Denver Sluice this morning. Not a lot to report, but a few bits and peices going over and around 50 Song Thrushes in the hedgerows, so some stuff is moving inland.

Thanks Simon, will have a look at that when I have time tomorrow. Sean, the bird was on the edge of the dell, by the black bench.

Cheers for that James. As Simeon said, the light was appalling, so there was no chance of separating it from a hybrid even if we had known how to! On the other hand, the light was so rubbish that the wing panel had to be pretty obvious for us to have picked it out at all... Pity the bird wasn't...
