    Agree wih tenex' scepticism on the micro-contrast theory and think it all boils down to resolution. If you have ever viewed a 1951 USAF chart through a (boosted) binocular or scope, it would be absurd to suppose that binocolar A had better contrast at low spatial frequencies than binocular B...
