That's a bit of a weird sounding cuckoo - sounds like it's got a bit of a frog in its throat!

I had a John Wyndham moment about half an hour in while looking out of the velux window ... The sky started off as a luminous green to the north when I went out about 11, I was wondering if I was imagining it and there was major works on the A30 10 miles to the north. Later on deep magenta...

Just saw a large Sparrowhawk fly over whilst I was on the phone and looking out the lounge window. So long since I added anything new!

After a number of possibly less common passerines in or from the garden, Blackcap, Firecrest, Chiffchaff, Bullfinch, Fieldfare and Linnet, finally managed to add - 30th Jan 37. House Sparrow whilst sorting out the washing mid afternoon, a flock chirping away in the back hedge behind the...

You mean the 'squelch' alarm? Barn Owl has a rolling rrr alarm call which is v similar to the Snipe drumming irrc, that was what I was thinking of. I heard it with Tawny's in winter too, so I guess it was an interaction between the two. I guess a Tawny Owl could quite easily flush a Snipe...

I had what I thought was a Snipe one year, but it turns out that Barn Owl has an alarm call that is almost indistinguishable. Which kind of call was it?

January 24th: 36. Grey Heron Was on the phone earlier when saw one fly low over out of the living room window being mobbed by Jackdaws. Bit bizarrely saw one nearby in a tussocky field above the res when walking back from Asda, don't see them in fields much in the UK usually. Reasonable chance...

Since this is the Garden/Yard list thread, can I humbly suggest that it might be a good idea to restrict photos and sightings of birds on the thread to just birds seen as such? I mean, we could all post interesting birds we see nearby ... and it would keep it on topic a little more/less...

Mabe Burnthouse 17th Jan: 34. Chiffchaff! 35. Linnet I have now seen two nominate Chiffchaff this year. Happened to look out the living room window and saw a Chiffchaff in a tussock of grass next to the front path. It hopped around a bit and sat on a pallet - it thought it was a Wren perhaps...

Thanks ;-) I seem to have got away with it. Silly twisting injuries are the norm though - I once was building a wall, loads of physical work, all good, at the end of the day in the car I reached over to the back seat for my bag, of course, pulled a muscle ... but not serious even then.

Louder and lower pitch than the higher pitch of Goldcrest - or maybe it just sounds louder. Going more towards Great Tit? In any case, I'm not hugely confident with calls, but seeing it always helps ;-)

16th Jan: 28. Jay A couple of noisy birds in the fields behind the house while I was hanging the washing out Spent an hour or so in the middle of the day birding in the attic. Wrapped up warm. I was kind of sorting stuff out, but it became more of a birding session. A couple of Ravens over...

Mabe Burnthouse 15th Jan: 24. Greenfinch 25. Blackcap 26. Firecrest 27. Fieldfare Plenty of ivy berries still - it was the holly that had essentially gone. Looking out the window am - 3 Greenfinch eating Hawthorn berries in the hedge behind the neighbours, and then a couple of birds flitting...

Was out most of the day yesterday - got back about 4:30 and went to the back garden for a quick 5 minutes before going into the house. Movement in the ivy behind the house eventually resolved into 22. Song Thrush 23. Redwing Was a bit worried no berries left for Redwing, but still there ...

You have some rugged walking boots or similar? ;-) Wood Pigeon are one species known to breed (ie lay eggs) in every month of the year, so perhaps not that unusual - although most probably follow a more normal breeding season pattern. Interesting though. Noticed a lot more birdsong when out...

I think there's just a glitch in the local chiffchaff matrix then! (Or it's me). Only 1 Firecrest and not many Blackcap either. Admittedly I haven't been to any major preferred sites (one sewage works only, Bissoe, but they were working on it and inoperable), but been around College and Argal...

Whereas in Cornwall I have yet to see one locally anywhere at all this year ... despite visiting a fair few sites and hours in the field. Shocking. (One tristis type only - no nominate types).

Mabe Burnthouse January 11th: 21: Bullfinch A female type in the back garden (again initially in the fuchsia, then in the brambles along the fence). Think it may be the second garden record (in 4.5 years).

How could I have forgotten the drake Mallard which flew over? 19. Mallard I also had a slightly confusing pigeon on next doors roof, but realised it was probably a Feral Pigeon (or fat racing pigeon) which a neighbour further down the road has as a 'pet', so won't count that (standards etc ...
