    Guess the bird-

I think I meant the gap, didn't know about the uneven edges to the steps, so I'm the source of the misunderstanding. Good to learn something new.

    Guess the bird-

At first I as well thought it was Short-toed (because of the longish bill and why would you post a photo of the other if you have it in England already), but now the uneven steps (shown in the second and the third photo) bother me. Or maybe not uneven enough? Can we be certain that a part of the...

    Guess the bird-

A smart person here or elsewhere once wrote that in order to be able to recognise and identify rarer birds, one should first become very familiar with all the regular species.

    Guess the bird-

You don't have to visit faraway places to enjoy birding, find new birds and familiarise yourself with the more common species. Granted, your wader list--and possibly some others--might not fully develop as a result, but--on the other hand--you'll get to bird sites and habitats others pay less...

    Guess the bird-

Kestrel for the first would be my guess
  11. 01101001

    Guess the bird-

Yes: head shape, bill appears yellowish, head looms greenish (more so in the field), brownish neck, breast and part of the flank extremely washed out (see how bleached the other Mallards look), the rest of the flank somewhat darker with an even darker back. It had me stumped for quite a while...

    Guess the bird-

I'm afraid not (and the shape of the head would have to be a bit different from what I gather by looking at photos of Tufted Ducks--I've never seen one, only Pochards) EDIT: So, to recap, not a Pintail, Goosander, Red-crested Pochard, Garganey, Teal, Wigeon, Red-necked Grebe or Tufted Duck.

  19. 01101001

    Guess the bird-

I've just had a look at my other picture again, and it seems to confirm what I saw in the field. There's a lot of pretence here, but--unfortunately--not along these lines.

    Guess the bird-

Although the bird was quite distant, I think what I saw in the field makes it something else. (I have one other photo of it plus what I picked out through the bins.)
