27/05/24 Due to meet a group of German birders in the evening I managed an hour and half’s birding beforehand from tip to Hamitkoy and back. Nothing extraordinary but a good selection of birds in a short time. 2 Eleonora’s Falcons - same area around 3rd bridge. Also reported at Toparlar falls...

Possible though no white rump visible. We didn’t get our bins on the bird as we were cycling and stopped mid road, when it flew almost behind us. We were both clear on it being large and the bright sunlight and flight angle may have obscured a rump. I’ll return tomorrow , you never know. We had...

12/05/24 An hour and a half of casual birding/biking with Tora Benzeyen. A new area has opened up where access was previously blocked- a promising looking pool at the end of a quiet channel-side path. Squacco Heron on the pool and lots of Warblers in the scrub. 1 Golden Plover - beach, 1...

Despite my late start to spring for unavoidable reasons it’s been a cracker though no rarities involved. Good, sometimes spectacular , numbers of some target species and stunning views. Plus an influx of birders, and more to come it seems The area of the Namnam I re-explored with Dave B. has...

Yesterday evening whilst sipping on a sundowner on the balcony I was surprised to see a 40 + strong flock of Glossy Ibis towards the lake direction. I thought these had all passed through by now and guess they came down in the usual hidden area of Hamitköy marsh. Also had 3 Night Herons over the...

Good to hear Vinny. With a couple of long days and some luck it’s possible to rack up a very respectable list in this area. Plus the numbers involved and views are often superb. Had a stunning Scops Owl calling quite low down in an orange tree next door near sunset yesterday. Added to a Little...

03/05/24 A late afternoon ride along the Hamitköy road brought plenty of the usual marvels such as Woodchat and Masked Shrike, a stunning male Marsh Harrier hunting a few feet above me and a Pygmy Cormorant surfacing close by on one of the ditches. Highlight though was a Curlew Sandpiper on...

02/05/24 An afternoon with visiting birder Vinny started with a Spur Winged Plover beating its way across the lake against a strong wind. Then a Woodchat Shrike and 2 Rufous Bush Chats on the tip. Purple Heron made an appearance too. Then down to the Namnam , where a Black Stork was pretty much...

Good to hear. Hopefully be able to catch up with you. I’m curious where you’re staying? There’s not a lot between Hamitkoy and the dump though it’s a plum spot for birding. Had a few birders here recently and I’ve about a week of sightings to catch up on Birdforum. Currently a minimum of 5...

20/04/24 Took a quick trip out between rain squalls and found a crisp male Collared Flycatcher in the mulberry trees and another Great Spotted Cuckoo in the next door grove. Also a surprise Isabelline Wheatear on a small football pitch a few streets away.

Give me a shout if that’s the case and I’ll meet you. There’s still lots moving through. Savi’s might be possible if in usual spot and small numbers of waders seen daily. There’s another birder here on holiday visiting the tip regularly.

Had an interesting conversation last night with a friend whose family have long been familiar with the wildlife of the area (without hunting it I should add). He described what sounds very much like Jungle Cat. He said the local name translates roughly as Cane Cat as it’s seen close to the lake...

07/04/24 Yesterday I took a car trip to Sultaniye for the soothing, therapeutic, pox-ridden manky waters of the thermal baths. A sure fire cure for kidney stones I've been assured. A photogenic Black Stork was wading below the Hamitkoy road bridge and 3 Shoveler flew downstream. A pair of...

16/03/24 A recent introduction to the joy of kidney stones has limited my spring birding this year. However there’s been plenty about on my occasional foray out or from the balcony. Today, Alpine Swifts in impressive numbers were dotted high across the sky. More Swifts also distantly towards the...

03/03/24 First White Stork of the spring for me today, circling Yangı so possibly one of the mosque nesting pair. A White throated Kingfisher called from the forest close to the lake and 3 Barn Swallows were over the garden.

24/02/24 A couple more Swallows and House Martins along the lake and over town this week. A Goshawk shot out of the forest edge this morning and a Sardinian Warbler sang from the remains of a palm grove. Highlight though was a Black Stork this evening flying towards Hamitkoy over the forest.

Köyceğiz & Mugla area - SW Turkey

17/02/24 A Barn Swallow and 3 House Martins heralded the warm spring weather and ChiffChaffs were calling from all corners. A typically Turkish encounter with a local ended up with me (and my bike) being given a lift in a tractor trailer to his land by the lake near the Namnam river. Here he...

Back in Turkey- glorious sunny day. An afternoon out round the lake started with 3 Little Gulls amongst the Black headed gull flock, 2 Mediterranean hills amongst the beach flock. A Sandwich Tern was fishing mid-lake on the edge of the gull flock. A circling Marsh Harrier pair stood out well in...

I’m in the Uk now for a few days and managed to catch up with a handful of Waxwings. Last notable bird of Turkey was a Black Stork wading through flooded fields near Ortaca. Easily visible from the D400. Pleased to catch up with this wintering bird which may be the same one seen in Hamitkoy...

09.01.24 A big storm and torrential downpours for a couple of days made any kind of birding difficult but a break in the weather brought crippling views of the male Goshawk. On and off throughout the day either soaring or balancing on the wind and occasionally returning to the high garden...
