Back from a family holiday to Walt Disney World in Florida, and in between riding rollercoasters and meeting Mickey & his pals, I managed to make a bit of progress on my world Life List! Of the 46 species I saw, a rather pleasing 28 were lifers, and in fact, I passed 500 species on the trip (not...

Rather delighted to get a lifer on a business trip to Switzerland last week. I was in the Valais canton for a couple of days, and one evening, I headed up to a small village called Les Marécottes (Salvan) which is at c1400m, in the mountains above Martigny, where I was staying. I was hoping to...

Finally, finally knocked off one of the commoner species missing from my UK list, and in the most surprising of circumstances: a fabulous Long-eared Owl seen perched on a road-side fence-post while driving home through North Yorkshire last week, causing a rapid braking, scrabbling in my glove...

I'm still in shock! Who would have thought a work trip to Scandinavia would give me not one, not two, not even three.... but FOUR lifers!! Two days in Sweden and two in Finland, quite busy with meetings, but not so full as to not allow a bit of birding, especially with 20+ hours of daylight...

Two (or three) lifers on my recent holiday near Alicante in Spain. Firstly a pair of stone curlew seen twice in the same location near El Hondo nature reserve, and then a spotted redshank on Santa Pola salinas. Also, a first confirmed sighting of a night heron, again at El Hondo (my previous...

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

A quite unexpected addition yesterday on a cycle ride out from my in-laws' place near Alicante in Spain. I decided to take a late afternoon ride to El Hondo, but had very little time to stay long enough to expect anything unusual, but on the way there, two mystery birds took off from a track I...

Two new lifers in a week :) Neither is all that rare, but both gave prolonged close views and were well worth the effort! Firstly, a water rail at Rutland Water a couple of weeks back, and then a bearded tit in Hyde Park last week :t:

On a roll....today's lifer: Golden Plover at Prestwick Carr, Northumberland. A huge - and growing - flock circling over the fields calling, before disappearing out of sight to the north. You see, it's easy to get them when you're a relative novice! (Although I'm rather pleased that it takes my...
