I encountered this ridiculously obliging young Brown Hare on the riverbank at Strumpshaw Fen this evening. If I stood still it would approach to within a couple of metres. If I moved it would scamper off, only to return again if I stayed where I was. It even stopped for a wash and brush up at...

I photographed this Chinese Water Deer at Strumpshaw the other day. Usually they bound away as soon as they spot me but this one carried on feeding, apparently unconcerned, despite only the drainage ditch separating us. Are they getting bolder now that they are becoming more numerous? Ron

Thanks for the info about Harvest Mice, Chris James and Mark. I will have to keep looking. I believe Hickling is meant to be a good place for them. There were Bank Voles below the feeders at Sculthorpe when I was there last year. I am not surprised with the amount of seed on the ground. Ron

Has anybody here managed to find a Harvest Mouse in the wild? They are still on my wish list. When I was visiting Sculthorpe Moor last year there was a 'mouse-arium' containing some in the reception and they really are delightful little creatures. Ron

It's a bit mundane but are you folks seeing (m)any hedgehogs this year? I usually have a few using my garden in Hopton but so far I haven't seen any. I thought I saw some droppings on the lawn a couple of months ago but not recently. My partner has one foraging in her garden every evening, which...

I am glad you connected with the Chinese Water Deer Mike. They are strange looking little animals, aren't they. I can't remember the last time I failed to see at least one at Strumpshaw, usually in the meadows by the river. You were quite lucky with the Swallowtails as they are hard to find if...

I agree. Strumpshaw Fen is nearly foolproof for Chinese Water Deer. I also see them regularly at Carlton Marshes near Lowestoft in Suffolk. Late afternoon or evening is the best time to see them. Ron

Extraordinary, remarkable, who would have believed it ............. 2 degrees on 2nd May. ;) Great shot Chris. Your persistence really paid off. :t: Ron

Bearing in mind that a representative from Springwatch was asking for information about the Thetford Otters here recently, I suspect that there will be even more people visiting them if they are still around in a few weeks. Ron

Not the most exotic of mammals but when I came home tonight I was pleased to see two small Hedgehogs in the passageway leading to my house. They were about 6-7 inches long so I hope they will grow enough to survive the winter. According to Ann Widdecombe, Hedgehogs are struggling badly at the...

I am nor sure if this qualifies for Norfolk or Suffolk mammals (it was right on the border.) The other night we went to a meal at the White Lion, Wheatacre and just after we turned off at Haddiscoe we encountered three young deer standing in the middle of the road. At first I thought they were...

That's interesting Paul. I am now wondering if my 'Common Shrew' in post no. 3 is actually a Water Shrew. Reading about them they should be very dark on top and pale underneath and usually have white tufts on the ears. Here are two more shots. Can anyone confirm what sort of Shrew it is? Ron

Can I play too? A Common Shrew at Strumpshaw Fen. We saw another one today at Horsey, which was foraging for food at our feet for over five minutes. They seem to be either extremely timid or completely unconcerned by human presence - nothing in between. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera with...
