Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Hi Neal, your birds appear to be Greylag x Canada hybrids and certainly not Brents. Cheers Steve

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Hi Nick, it would have been Doxey. Me, Andy Lathem and Ian Moore I think, had a singing bird there on our Staffs bird race and also again on the 18th May with John Higginson. Cheers Steve

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

With only 10 days left this year, this will be the first year since 1959 that the species has not been recorded at Belvide.

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Hi Craig, that has made me feel a lot better about the bird I saw at Belvide on Sunday. I was beginning to question myself that I'd cocked up. I was questioned about my use of the word categorically, but when you've been doing gull roosts the amount of years I have, you almost get to know...

What's the latest from Chasewater this evening. I'm getting lots of mixed messages about this Gull this afternoon. It's a hybrid/ No it's not. Saw an image of a darker mantled bird sent to my phone. Very confusing. Cheers Steve

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Hi Steve, yes the hybrid does have a pale iris. See below photo of the Priorslee bird taken in 2012 and thanks to Craig for explaining his side of things. Cheers Steve

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Hi all, look, I'm not going to get into a slanging match and I will hold my hands up and say that I agree that the open wing shots Zac shows, do show a different pattern between the two birds concerned. However I'm still totally happy that the bird I saw at Belvide last night is the returning...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

I would find it amazing that this bird is not the bird I had in the Belvide roost this evening. I can categorically say that today's Belvide bird is the same bird that has been returning for the last 3 winters. Craig, I would be interested to know your personal description of this bird regarding...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Hi all, sorry to disappoint but this is the hybrid Ring-billed/LBB Gull hybrid. This bird dropped into the Belvide roost this evening. Having seen this bird in the past at Belvide and Priorslee it must be the same bird. The mantle shade is darker around Common Gull shade to me. It is also on...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Hi Tom, My personal best at Belvide is 6 (5 drakes) on the 14th May 1993 which I think could be the best spring count. Cheers Steve

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Hi all, A Hooded Crow was seen on Cannock Chase yesterday afternoon by the cadet huts. I think it was seen around 3.30pm when it flew towards the shooting butts before heading off towards the Tackeroo area. This afternoon 3 of us had a good search, ranging between the Tackeroo and the trig...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Hi all, The Armenian Gull look a like roosted again this evening. This time I managed to get some flight shots to confirm it's a sub adult Yellow-legged Gull. The wing shows just a single mirror on p10 which I presume is down to it not being an adult and will moult a mirror to p9 when it fully...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Hi all, just to say that the gull showing characteristics of Armenian Gull roosted again this evening. Frustratingly I still haven't seen the wing pattern. I've posted a cropped pic to highlight the bill pattern and dark eye. Also 3 Iceland Gulls roosted this evening.

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Hi Adam, Thanks for asking around for more opinion. The mantle shade was my concern at the time, but as stated I was watching the bird in brilliant sunshine which bleached it out. When the sun went down the mantle shade looked much darker. I think the combination of bill pattern and that dark...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Hi all, I picked out this very interesting gull in the Belvide roost this evening that showed characteristics of Armenian Gull. The bill had a noticeable black subterminal bar, red gonys and pale ivory tip. The eye was strinkingly dark, even blackish. Unfortunately I didn't see the wing pattern...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Hi all, I have spoken to Kevin Clements this evening about this incident and he will be looking into all possibilities the Bird Club can do to sort these people out. I spoke to an angler at Belvide last week who fishes Gailey and they are just as pissed off. More so as they fear for their safety.

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Hi Martyn. I think my images probably show 4 different birds 3 males and a female. If I'm honest, I think there are several up there. Every time the flock settled we were picking out birds that looked good.

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Hi all. I had another session on Cannock Chase at Upper Longdon this morning with Ian Moore and Graham Mant. A flock between 30-40 birds were still in the area and with them were again at least 3 maybe more of these birds that were bulkier and showing larger bills. Below is a selection of images...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Hi all. Had a full morning up at Upper Longdon to look for Parrot Crossbills. In the end I left more confused. 2 possible candidates were seen that showed to be bigger, bull necked but the bills were not classic. A deep chup chup call was also heard. At the moment I'm not convinced and more...

Hi all, Just to say that the Belvide blog is down at the moment due to Surfbirds doing some maintenance to their site which effects the blog. It was working for a short time today so hope it will be up and running soon. The Greenland White-fronted Goose definitely came down in fields north of...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Hi Alan, Belvide gets both Marsh and Willow Tit. I've looked at your photo in the ID forum and it's not possible to determine. However, because you saw them at the woodland feeding station they were more likely to have been Marsh Tit. I don't mention them on the blog as they are resident all...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Hi all, I'm going to be a bit sceptical about this photo. To me it has a feeling that it has a superimposed look to it. Where are it's legs and feet? On the trunk you can see shadows cast from the smaller twigs but not a single shadow cast from the bird. A Red Backed Shrike is a very good bird...
