I think access is limited as its CWT land? There are some footpaths around the area, from Walk Mill is quite good, also by the old packhorse bridges at Hockenhul plats is fascinating! Best bet is prob to dig out an OS map and plan a walk. I think Walk Mill have some leaflets on walks in the...

While out walking our beast on Chester meadows this afternoon, saw 2 kingfishers flying upstream close to the near bank. I've sat on this bench loads of times (the last one when you turn right from the Bottoms Lane end of the meadows) and never seen any here before, so delighted to see two...

So, I was crouching under my redcurrant bush picking tonight's pud, when i heard some wingflaps very close. Stood up to look + a surprised sparrowhawk took off from the top of the bush not 2 ft in front of me! Brill, I reckon the clever b*gg*r had seen the bush twitching as I picked + swooped in...

Excellent day at BMW today. Apart from the wood sandpiper, 2 singing sedge warblers, nesting reed buntings, plenty of whitethroat, but my highlight was the excellent display from the reed warblers. They were popping up and showing really well for a change, best bit was finding 2 newly fledged...

Driving from Chester down towards sealand rd today, just before turning left to go to the tip, I heard a loud distinctive peep and an oystercatcher flew low overhead and landed on the roof of chestercarsupermarket. Being an old petrol stn the roof is one of those big flat canopies you get over...

Pleasant few hrs at BMW today. About 50 avocets, with a fair few mating + preparing their scrapes; my first chicks of the year were 2 fluffy pompom moorhens, main highlight was a merlin perched on a fence post to the left of reception.

Excellent high tide watch at Burton marsh today. I parked in the industrial estate + walked along the cycle path, 3 jays, 4 pied wags + a few meadow pipets before the boardwalk. At Burton marsh picked up a peregrine perched on a fence post way out in the marsh. By 12 o clock the tide was still...

pleasant trip down to burton marsh today. Quickly picked up the 2 great white egrets beyond decca pools, although they relocated way out in the marsh. Loads of little egrets around, also stonechat, reed bunting and meadow pipits, and widgeon, lapwing, teal, all the usual suspects. Didn't spot...

The long eared owl at BMW yesterday was brill! Also Hen harrier and water rail put in brief appearances. Glad to see the rspb have someone stationed on the path to stop the over enthusiastic ones amongst us climbing the tree to get better photos! There are gaps in the branches which allow good...

Brilliant few hours spent at Budworth Mere today. From the hide overlooking the reedbed, plenty of GC grebes on the mere, as well as tufties, pochard and gadwall. The usual huge numbers of Canada geese (with a handful of what looked like greylag) in the distance as well as cormorants. I think...

For a change instead of parkgate, I'm thinking of viewing the forthcoming hightide from the welsh side of the dee, say oakenholt. Does anyone know if this is a good idea or is the English side of the river much better? Ta!

Interesting that they used to breed under the bridge Jane! I don't often come back from Liverpool late at night, but when I do I seem to see barn owls, the previous time was at the M53 eastham roundabout, when one came across the roundabout heading SE into the fields. Afterburners! Nay, its...

Driving back from Liverpool tonight, abt 10.30, we'd just exited the wallasey tunnel and saw a barn owl flying by the side of the road just before j1 of the m53. 10 mins later after coming off the m53 and heading down towards queensferry, we saw another one fly across the road by childer...

To be honest Alex, I find the sight and sound of hundreds of geese, of whatever variety, coming in to land just as fascinating! We quite often get skeins (think thats the right word!) of geese over our house presumably going to + from the dee estuary, I'm always rushing out with my bins, luv...
