    New Eyepiece - SDL4

I think sample variation plays a big part, possibly outweighing differences between versions. My V2 was distinctly better than the V3 I compared it with last year. Sample variation is the only reason I can think of to account for that. Having said that a new ED element is surely an improvement...

Brief comparison berween MHG VS EDG '8X42'

Great review! Thank you for it. And great photos I have 7x42 EDG and I agree with what you say. The EDG may not match the SF and NL but it is an older design. I really like it's comfort level that I can use all day long. I also enjoy it's relatively low brightness compared to Zeiss models...

    New midsized Razor UHDs

Hi Paul, I see globe effect in the opticron 7x36 and the Swarovski el sv 8x32. One without and one with field flatteners. Interested to know why in the opticron. Is it the field curvature? The edges could be focussed in so I think there was only field curvature not distortion.

    New Eyepiece - SDL4

    V4 is wider than V2 👍

    New Eyepiece - SDL4

Hi 4john, I've not seen any with my V2. Last year I tried my V2 against a V3 (both on my scope so no variables that way). My V2 was sharper than the V3. I put it down to sample variation. I'd rather have my sharp V2 with a touch less fov that a poorer view V3 with more fov. I didn't see any on...

    New midsized Razor UHDs

As they say, your mileage may vary! So don't let me put you off. Give them a try. I took am surprised that 19mm wasn't enough er for me. Is the globe effect only caused by field flatteners? The first time I saw it was in opticron bga classic 7x36s. They don't have field flatteners. I thought...

    New midsized Razor UHDs

Hi all, I briefly tried the Razor 8x32 uhd yesterday and was disappointed to find the view really falls off at the edges. The sweet spot being approx 50-60% of the fov. For my eyes and eyeglasses at least. I found the blurry edges strong enough to distract from the view. It may be that my...

    New Eyepiece - SDL4

In a very short comparison between my SDLv2 and a SDLv4 today, I could see no difference. At times I thought the v4 may have a touch more contrast but when I looked again it didn't 🤷🏼‍♀️

    New midsized Razor UHDs

Would you expect the 8x32 uhd razor to have edge to edge clarity with a 9* fov? Does it have field flatteners?

Internal-focusing Porros (Leuopold, Minox) - anyone still using them?

Years ago I briefly had a pair of the opticron 8x42s. Great view but such a narrow fov meant I didn't keep them. If they had 7.5* or more fov, I probably would have kept them.

APM 6.5x32 APO - Some first impressions

I really hope the bridge is up to the job. These are intriguing bins. Low mag in a porro with long e/r is very appealing to me. I love a 7x and I love a porro 🤞👍

    Old HDF Eypiece Identification

Yes I think 23x too. It's a nightmare CE eyepiece and I like 23x, not too low, not too high. Having said that I love the 17x ep on my MM4 so right and wide. Edit- not "a nightmare CE eye piece". It's a nice eyepiece. Predictive text strikes again!

Anyone used DBA VHD+ from Opticron

I have only ever looked through them in a shop but I decided that 8x42 is not for me because it only has a 7 degree field of view. Under par compared to many others that are 8 degrees or more. For me a wide view is important.

Having 2 pairs of binoculars. Which would you choose?

For me the Leica Retrovid 7x35s and Meopta Meostar 7x42s for when it's really wet or I want the extra light gathering.

    MM60 or 77?

Another difference between the two is you get a wider fov with the 60 than the 77 and lower magnification which means greater depth of view. I like that about a smaller scope. Great for watching flocks and having more in the view and more of the view in focus. The 60 with the smallest fixed...

Quick & dirty review of 8x42 Opticron Aurora.

Sometime ago I briefly tried the Aurora's to see what all the fuss is about given Ratals huge enthusiasm. decided against them because of the focusser. Notchy and sloppy. Just didn't compare to my Leica, Meopta or Zeiss focusses.

Shetland - best month for birding?

Thanks everyone. Sounds like June might get be my best bet. But if it can only be september then so be it and hope for migrants. Nice! 😁

Shetland - best month for birding?

Hi, I want to go to Shetland next year. Doe to work etc September may be the month that I can go. Is that a good month for birding? What would I likely see in September? If Septembers not all that exciting, what's the best month for birding? I don't just mean for chasing rare migrants. I'm...

HDF 40831 vs 40810 question (and other specs)

I agree. If you're only having one eyepiece then get the SDL3. I have SDL2 and the 17x, 23x and 30x eyepieces. I use the SDL most but the 17x gets a lot of use too. It's so wide and bright. The 23x doesn't get much use and the 30 even less.

    Whichcar window mount?

I must admit I think the window mount does look quite awkward. Perhaps keeping it simple (and low cost) with a bean bag is the way forward. Thanks Pyrtle

    Whichcar window mount?

Just discovered this one which looks interesting. Arca swiss plate which I think means it will take the plate from my Benro S2 head which would be very useful. I also like that the handle appears quite short. Anyone got any experience of it?

    Whichcar window mount?

Hi everyone, Having never used a car window mount before, I am wondering which one is best. The Opticron looks the sturdiest to me judging from online photos. I am also wondering if one without a handle would be better given the restriction on movement/space in a car. The now discontinued...

    Opticron mm4 60 kit.

I have the same set up and love it. I really like the 15x lower mag for great depth of field and the same 4mm e/p as an 80mm scope at 20x 👍 Excellent little scope you can carry all day long

    Camo painting for tripod

I agree. Camo has limited use for birdwatching. It probably helps with mammals though. Fieldcraft is more important. Moving slowly and quietly. Being still when necessary, etc. Just being unobtrusive.
