Water Pipit or "littoralis"Rock Pipit , Ayrshire, Scotland

Yes, I hadn't notice that difference in colour of teh underparts compared to undertail coverts thanks. I think now that although Water can be quite well streaked the streaks are thinner and more well-defined than on this bird which has quite thick and smudgy streaking . The blue-grey upperparts...

Water Pipit or "littoralis"Rock Pipit , Ayrshire, Scotland

This Pipit is confusing me slightly as the very white underparts and obvious white supecilium and upperpart colour are telling me Water Pipit going into summer plumage, but the heavy straking on the underparts make me think "littoralis". Anyone now and tell me why?

Fiscal Flycatcher & Southern Boubou Marievale Bird Sanctuary South Africa Oct

Agree with lockbreeze926 . The first few are Fiscal Flycatcher(finer bill with no hook at the end) ,. 6 and 7 show an obvious hook on the bill so are Fiscal Shrike. Your Boubou is good

Pipit Water or rock? Lagoon of Santo André Portugal

Rock Pipit , Troon Here is a Scandinavian Rock pipit at Troon, part of a Norwegian ringing program. You can see it shows an eyestripe , but not as clear as the water and it is much more heavily streaked underneath ,and onto the belly(though that can't be seen in the photo)

Pipit Water or rock? Lagoon of Santo André Portugal

Water Pipit , Troon Here is one of the two Water...notice how clear the eyestripe is, how white the belly is and how fine the streaking is

Pipit Water or rock? Lagoon of Santo André Portugal

A tricky bird. It would have been useful to see the tail better, but from what I can make of it the outer tail feathers don't jump out at you as pure white, but are greyish looking. The breast streaking is too heavy and goes too far down the centre for Water. I veer towards "Creedence" and a...

    Jackdaw? in Scotland

After 40 years of birding , I don' often get stumped by common species , but I don't mind saying this ones got me baffled. I thought it was a juvenile Jackdaw becaue of the head pattern, bill shape and colour, but it has a dark eye. The bill colour seems wrong for Carrion Crow and shape is wrong...

    Hen Harrier - Bulgaria

Hen Harrier has five visible "fingers" , whereas Pallid has four. Hen is also more broad-winged , so I would agree with your assessment.Pallid looks pointy wingd, Hen more rounded too.

    Spotted Flycatcher in Djibouti

Looking at Avibase checklist for Djibouti you have only two choices for flycatcher ...spotted and Gambaga. I used google to search for Gambaga as I don't know it at all , and low and behold it is like a Spotted Flycatcher in many respects , but has a pale base to the lower mandible...so there...

one from Isla Canela, South Spain

Nice place to holiday. I was there in spring once...The choice is limited to Dunlin or Curlew Sandpiper. The bill doesn't look nearly long enough for Curlew Sandpiper , which also tends to look very "leggy" and a more slenderwader than dunlinn because of a longer neck. I would plump for winter...

    Raptor , Tramantunas ,Mallorca, 3 October 2018

Hi , I stopped at Gorg Blau Reservor in the Tramantunas Mountains and took out my bridge camera to photograph some scenery. I wish I'd got out my good camera and got a better shot of this. I thought at the time it was a Griffon , but I'm finding the pale tail a bit puzzling. It also seem to...
