    Birding in Alicante Province

Thanks for that condor. I did get up into the mountains north of Crevillent and one of the Bonelli’s Eagles showed after only 15 minutes. Also there were around 6 Red-billed Chough and 2 Blue Rock Thrush. My wife, who isn’t a birder, was with me so I only stayed for half an hour. 🙄

R7 for bird photography and birds in flight

Currently in Spain where the weather is sunny and warm, 17-24*c during the day but, more importantly, with good light if you obviously avoid the middle of the day. The attached photo of a Red-crested Pochard was taken with the R7, the 100-500 (at 500mm) and the 1.4 extender. The light was good...

    Birding in Alicante Province

We are currently staying up on the La Finca Golf Club in a rental property. Balearic Shearwater are currently being seen, in small numbers, off Guardamar Lighthouse/Faro de Guardamar. A male Surf Scoter has been at the site for c. two months but I was unlucky on my visit earlier in the week...

R7 for bird photography and birds in flight

With previous talk about not using extenders with the R7, or at least if you do, wait until you have very good light, I today tried the following combination :- R7 - Canon EF 500mm f4L Mk ii prime - 2x iii - EF/RF adapter The photo is of a Drake Smew on a local pool to me. The light was...

Thought on Topaz Photo AI vs. DxO Photolab

Thanks very much MiddleRiver. That’s very good. The shadows have been slightly removed, the bill is marginally sharper but the main thing, for me, is that the eye stands out considerably. I have tried to save the new image to my photos but it won’t let me. Mark

Thought on Topaz Photo AI vs. DxO Photolab

Thanks very much Mike. Yes, I do shoot in jpeg. I’ll take your comments on board and give the matter more thought. There aren’t many times I’ve wanted to drastically alter a photograph but the above RTD was one! The whole set of the dozen or so photos I kept (of it) were all in deep shadow with...

    Guide book for Costa Blanca

I also have the Graham Critchell book but an earlier edition. Covers loads of sites in the area including the steppe area up towards Albacete which I found very useful. The Costa Blanca Bird Club may possibly have a copy and, at one time, copies were available from the visitor centre at El Hondo.

Thought on Topaz Photo AI vs. DxO Photolab

Hi Mike. I’ve been contemplating buying software like Photoshop or Lightroom for some time but never got round to it. I don’t particularly want a monthly subscription, rather I would prefer a one-off purchase. I have always been happy enough with what Apple/Mac/iPad provides but, on occasions...

Pacific Diver - Eglwys Nunnyd, Port Talbot, Wales

I made the long journey down from Cheshire to see this lovely bird and wasn’t disappointed. It was a very cold day with clear blue skies and the diver obliged with some very close views.

R7 for bird photography and birds in flight

Tend to forget that there is a state, to be honest, it’s all about the city. We did a New England road trip in 2019 and drove up through Vermont, almost to the Canadian border. Very close to New York State, obviously, so I bet the scenery is just as nice.

R7 for bird photography and birds in flight

Juvenile Black-throated Diver on Crosby Marine Lake today, blustery and challenging light. Took around 250 photos, then narrowed it down to 50 that I could do something with. Probably have 15-20 that are pretty decent, with the one attached, my favourite. Not as many keepers as with my R5 and...

    South Africa - November 2023

I have attached below a Trip Report to South Africa in a PDF document. It follows the format of all my various trip reports over the years and whilst not as detailed as some of the reports on here, it at least gives a species list and details the more specific areas that I birded. For this trip...

R7 for bird photography and birds in flight

Possibly. I bought the R7 to simply replace my five year old 7Dii and to go ‘all mirrorless.’ The general opinion seems to be that the R7 is a definite upgrade on the 7Dii. With my R5, which I love, I use my RF 100-500 lens with a 1.4 extender and am therefore shooting at 700mm max. With my R7...
