    New binos by mid June.

With regards to: "new tech binos having a shorter lifespan" I don't know what you are specifically referring to, but rest be assured, modern day binoculars are pretty decent and will serve you at least a decade, that is, they will serve you until they fall apart. I have my current pair of Zeiss...

    Golden Eagle/Crowned Eagle

I would make an account on the falconry forum and ask over there. Curious to know what frankenstein birds would be possible.

    New binos by mid June.

I would always consider: 1. depreciation; e.g. A swaro / leica / zeiss (in that order) depreciates less than a nikon, vortex, leupold. e.g. if you buy a Swaro CL 8x30 for 1200 dollar, you can probably sell it for around 900 euro in 2 years from now. Just saying that the risk buying isn't as...

    Computer Software

Observation is free and has a sound database. Not paid, easy to extract and import data (from/to ebird, scythebill, whatever), easy to filter / visualize your own data or other's data, either on a map or in a list of species (all species groups covered). App is very intuitive as well, and has...

    Brazil Atlantic Forests

So basically you're asking whether to do a 10-12 day trip or a 20 day trip... If only my wife gave me that as a choice, it would be pretty obvious what I would do! For Brazilian standards, I would say this isn't a big stretch (distance on the road between Curitiba and Belo Horizonte, in a...

Needed - easy way to check collimation

Just curious: you said the Zeiss seemed correctly aligned. Did you confirm this with a star test as well?

    Intel/experiences with Turquoise-throated barbet

Have you checked Cloudbirders? https://cloudbirders.com/tripreport?location=Thailand&contents=turquoise&sort_order=added_desc The report of Bill Simpson is pretty good and seeing the Barbet (at least if / when the road is rideable) seems pretty straightforward.

    Independent birding near Cusco

I hope you can see / open this, but here is a Google map I made. S-C-Peru S-C-Peru – Google My Maps It has some waypoints (for royal cinclodes as well), note that the tapaculo is wrongly named. Most other points will probably still do.

How many cuckoos have you seen?

My excuse is that it was super windy in Cuba and out of season (end of December), same for Dominican Republic (beginning of December) and both trips were high-paced endemics birding. I just couldn't bump into one and I reckon it's much easier in e.g. March / April in any of those countries :)

How many cuckoos have you seen?

76 it seems. I've missed Mangrove Cuckoo in 2 countries while looking hard for it. I haven't missed too many of them but could probably have seen another 10 while in range (but not necessarily in the best season when they're calling). 1 Guira Cuckoo - Guira guira 2 Greater Ani -...

A visitor's guide to European birding portals

Thanks for this wonderful overview as I often struggle as well when checking sightings in other countries. For Georgia, rarities are often entered on Georgia.observation.org This could have something to do with the start of systematic migration monitoring at Batumi which was initiated by 2...

Colombia - Minca and Tayrona: what to do?

You seem to be stressing way too much thibault, as simmo said, most things are easy on the ground and many “problems” you see now are only in your imagination. Once there you can arrange almost everything by just asking. You can ask here but everything here is theory. Once there, you ask and...

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

Be careful with what you suggest as Josh is, as far as I known, an American citizen, born (and raised) in the USA, and even while he is indulging on chocolate and swiss cheese fondue nowadays in his posh Swiss chalet, he spends a considerable amount of time in the Western hemisphere chasing Tiny...

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

My opinion: if it works, it works. Nothing really works perfect but I’m always open for improvements, be it a simple rank number (eg lets name barn swallow #1 and house sparrow #11.000 and all others ranked in between), a strong password (let’s name barn swallow = Rz3!$e25%) or a name that...

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

I'm drifting off-topic a fair bit, but Latin names are usually the following binomial = genus + specific name. You have a zillion antwrens, but thanks to the Latin genus name, you can distinguish in e.g. Herpsilochmus and Myrmotherula etc, and once you know you have, in a certain region, only...

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

Be assured I'm all-in for universal names, I'm still having headaches whenever I see a Skua or a Jaeger, a Loon or a Diver, when I see one and am unsure what name my app has in mind to log the observation. With regards to uniform names, maybe one will give in to the other, maybe they won't, but...

Petition to AOS Leadership on the Recent Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

Any national bird committee can choose its own bird names in their own language. Here is Barn Swallow for you, in Spanish Pick whatever you want, and call it whatever you want, but the scrutiny the AOS is facing for performing the task they are assigned for, is imho hilarious.

Owling trip to the Philippines and Indonesia, including Sulu.

Great reading. So Tawi-tawi is 'safe' enough to pay a visit? I have wondered lately about including the Sulu islands into a Mindanao visit, and just by looking at pictures in google maps, it seems a lot of Philippinos visit the Sulus... (or just parts of...)?

NE India. Eaglesnest and Singalila NP.

Great info! I can vouch for redbus, having used them quite a bit on my previous trips. Happy to hear you went with Bikram, he's a very friendly guy and while I was there 2 years ago, he was head of the kitchen and tried to accomodate my group as good as possible. I hope the ones looking for...

North East India - Eaglenest, Kaziranga, Nameri, Dirang

If I may say so, I find the schedule a bit overly ambitious, but I would rather prefer it this way than the other way around. Including Manas is a good idea, including Tawang is quite bit more driving over sinuous roads. Are you after Satyr tragopan? I wouldn’t mind visiting tawang if only for...

North East India - Eaglenest, Kaziranga, Nameri, Dirang

I have a 1-13th of March list for: Nameri (1st and last day) + Eaglesnest (11 days in between). Mind you this were the early days, i.e. not many trip reports, only hand-written maps by friends, no coordinates, few stake-outs... I was on my own with one guy bringing me to places on a motorbike...

Need Father/Son Birding Trip Destination Idea

I've heard good things about Nelson Apolo, so even if you don't find anyone else, consider it a solid choice that you could as well have picked if you had more options.

North East India - Eaglenest, Kaziranga, Nameri, Dirang

Good question: Both have their pros and cons, both are great, but there are some important nuances / differences that can either be attractive or not. Just two examples: Black-necked Crane will still be in Sangti Valley end of Feb / beginning of March (and not anymore in April), while Large...
