Another good question is how on Earth did those little Melanodera tanagers colonise such far-flung islands not once, but actually twice? I doubt very much that either current mainland species could repeat that feat.

Time calibration and Linnean ranks in birds

Already an update required for the next version of L'inventaire 😉

Time calibration and Linnean ranks in birds

Yeah that's a firmer placing. Still a pretty early divergence

Time calibration and Linnean ranks in birds

I recall Sporopipes has an interesting position with regard to the other Ploceids. Though perhaps it isn't well supported? Can't check at the moment

    Latest IOC Diary Updates

🤣 Actually, ignore my earlier comments. They're not too bad as names go

Come on, it's Hungarian maybe? Not too difficult 🤣🤣🤣

    Latest IOC Diary Updates

Oh no one is going to listen to my quiet little plea for better thought-out, more memorable names😊 If I ever get to see these species I'll probably wind up using the scientific names on my life list. Maybe its just a personal psychological trait. To give an example, I have seen 2 species of...

Oh God! Those replacements are almost instantly forgettable!

Time calibration and Linnean ranks in birds

Pretty much 'snap!' I'll check for differences but it looks much the same as I worked out, and very satisfying it was too😌

Time calibration and Linnean ranks in birds

It's very much a work in progress but I will tidy up a copy and email it to you👍

Time calibration and Linnean ranks in birds

I did and on checking the book it appears that I was looking at the unconstrained tree in error earlier this morning. The book's main results are derived from the constrained tree. If you were to use the unconstrained ages for the core Tyrannidae there would be four clades older than 14 my...

Time calibration and Linnean ranks in birds

OK so the core Tyrannidae is intact with all represented clades less than 15 my old. Perhaps I should have written Tyrannides. Anyway Pipromorphidae and Tachurisidae separate - no surprises! Platyrinchidae has a split around 18mya between Platyrinchus and Neopipo Tityridae has a similar but...

Time calibration and Linnean ranks in birds

Yup! I'm looking at "The Largest Avian Radiation" 's dated phylogenetic tree right now and that works for many traditional families. And for those of us who like odd or unusual splits, there are a few unexpected delights. For instance Turdidae and Tyrannidae😊

Time calibration and Linnean ranks in birds

Cool! There's one or two of these I hadn't considered separating since time-calibration wasn't my top priority, but will give them another look now. Thanks!👌

Time calibration and Linnean ranks in birds

Very interesting!🤔 I must ponder over these as soon as I have some time

I love "Silver Plover". Nice concept which fits well with impressions the summer plumage lends. Golden lapwing is just weird🙃

Time calibration and Linnean ranks in birds

That sounds fascinating! I'd love to compare it to my own little 'collapsed hierarchy' mind-excercise👍

Cheers Mike! That'll be it (y)

Time calibration and Linnean ranks in birds

Well I can't really speak for Denmark or the rest of the UK but here in Scotland I've only ever seen breeding golden plovers in cold, bleak, windswept, upland places. Not true tundra perhaps but as close as you can get to it on the island of Britain. Also, a full quarter of the group are not...

Time calibration and Linnean ranks in birds

I've come across "Tundra Plovers" somewhere as a nice alternative to "Golden-Plovers" Can't remember where🤔

So I see but it's one I missed and adds information useful with my current fascination with the Indo-Pacific avifauna 😊

Some very intriguing relationships in that paper. Thanks for posting (y)

Brilliant! Thank you to whoever sorted out that species account. It has bothered me for a while now.(y)

Thanks Paul Clicking on the report link allows a user to flag up offensive or inappropriate content only. I discovered on another forum you must, as an ebirder have submitted at least 100 complete checklists in the previous year before you are allowed to reidentify someone elses photo. So, If I...

    Fringillidae

Not a comment about taxonomy but more of a note around a minor Id issue on Birds of the World. Now I love ebird and Birds of the World and use them extensively for exploration and pleasure so I'm in no way being critical of these resources, but someone please, please fix the Serinus flavivertex...
