How many of the potential raptor species for the U.K have people seen?

Not trawled through the literature to see if there any historic records that nobody alive today could have seen. If impossible to get a full set who is the closest? Also what effort was involved for those with a decent tally? Also what additional species are possible especially with increased...

Plans to reintroduce Golden Eagles to England and Wales?

While looking for something else I found a couple of articles about potentially reintroducing the Golden Eagle. Not sure if it is just a pipe dream or people are serious about this. Apparently historically the eagles were breeding in England at various lsocations and surely there are various...

    A poor autumn for scarcities

Obviously this autumn has been amazing for American passerines but it seems that it has been very poor for the likes of YBW, Barred Warblers, Wryneck etc. The winds have obviously played a big part in this but after a few really good years for YBW etc this year seems to stand out as really poor.

How many countries would you have to vist to see all the bird species in the world?

The current Guinness Book of Records says Claes-Goran Cederlund (died 2020 iirc) managed 9761 Sp from 135 countries. That must be a great percentage of the world total. I don't know how many countries don't have any endemics (there must be quite a few) as a total guess I would say not many more...

An exceptional spring for rareties in the U.K?

It certainly feels so with some top drawer rares and plenty of scarce i.e Night Herons, Alpine Swifts, B.W.Stilts etc to back these up. The medium level listers could add quite a few ticks. I appreciate that the very keen twitchers may have only added the two firsts but 2 ticks in the first 5...

    Pine Marten at Spurn

Would anybody like to hazard a guess where it came from? Surely there is no chance this is wild, but the other options are all pretty ridiculous. If it is an escape surely it would have done some decent travelling I have no.idea if there any animal collections any where near and I can't imagine...

How unusual is it for Oystercatchers to nest on buildings (U.K)?

Near where I work I have seen Oystercatchers copulating on the roof of a building a couple of times recently. There are large areas of flat roof to nest on if they choose to and some great feeding areas close by. I had a very quick search on Google and it mentioned the odd record in Scotland...

Does anyone know the rules regarding large scale removal of mature trees/ hedgerows in relation to planning/ building?

When I visited my local patch last week I came across a large strip of trees some very mature and an adjacent hedgerow that had been cut down to ground level. The area in question has been earmarked for extensive building work for a few years but so far no changes have been made until now. It...

Can anybody help with my nestbox mystery (U.K)?

I took down a nest box today (one of the ones with a rectangular gap on the front for robins etc). I was really surprised just how many bugs there were I.e lots of earwigs and quite a few small maggots. But also on top of the mossy nesting material there were lots of small seeds of various kinds...

What possible reasons could anybody have fir doing this?

Surely this was an illegal act. What possible "reason could anyone have for doing this? You would assume that the owls were killed to prevent them taking gamebird chicks. Seriously how many, if any chicks would they have predated? A lot of the pro hunting brigade bang on about how knowledgeable...

Dn many people keep a county year list?

Obviously most keen birders focus on their U.K year and county lists but have many people had a go at a county year list? Do people have any info on any counties individual county list records wether un/official. I think it would be a fun challenge for anyone with plenty of time on their...

Do Kestrel pairs stay together over winter?

Whilst birding today I saw a male and female Kestrel perched together and wondered if they were a pair. They are fairly numerous locally in the breeding season and assumed they were a pair with them both perched up together happily. A couple of weeks ago I was watching a male and female having...
