    The Birds of Durham

I think someone is going to be in the North Tees area sometime soon selling copies as it is heavy (very!!) and postage will be expensive. Look out for an announcement on the Teesmouth Bird Club or Durham Bird Club websites regarding times. I am sure there will be more information from someone...

    The Birds of Durham

Just got my copy of this new book today and it is absolutely fantastic. It must be the best value book ever, it is massive and packed with information, even up to 2011. Glad the birding is quiet at the moment as there is a lot to read. Congratulations to all involved!!

Seaton Tip and Seaton Common gulling - Winter 2011/12

2w Caspian Gull on Seaton Common this afternoon, a bird I have seen previously on Cowpen Bewley tip. To balance things up 2 1w Caspian Gulls there earlier included one that looked like a bird pictured on Seaton Common on 30th Nov 2011. Judging by the number of birds too far away on the latter...

    "Northern"-type Eider Cleveland?

What is the thinking on birds such as this: http://www.teesmouthbc.com/forumtbc/index.php?topic=3955.0 Seems to show northern bill colour and shape of lobes but no sails? Would they be visible in these photos? Are such birds hybrids, or integrades as they would be, or is this just within the...

    Rare and Scarce in Yorkshire

Hi This bird is a juv and apparently not from the local collection responsible for other dodgy sightings here over the last few years. Surely comparable to a previous Yorkshire record of a bird briefly at Spurn on 1st Oct 1978. Could easily relate to a lost juv making landfall and tagging on to...

    Durham Birding

Hi Mark I am fairly sure they are from Bolton-on-swale/Scorton, I am reliably informed that there is a population there numbering 48 or so. Wierdly there was once a very long staying Barnacle Goose around the local parks of Teeside, consorting with Canadas and taking bread. It had a blue ring...

    Crossbill sites

Hi Sorry about the title, enough to put anyone off, but I was hoping someone would be able to point me in the direction of the best locations currently in Speyside for Crossbills, particularly Parrots. I am up there for a few days with my wife soon and was hoping to get to grips with some...

    car hire

I have just returned from a week based at Agadir with my wife. I hired a car for a week from Holiday autos at a cost of around £170 for the week. They used Budget and all went very well and I felt safe using a company such as this in a country where everyone seemingly wants to fleece you. The...

    Kittiwakes

Just got back from a week around Agadir and was surprised to see several Kittiwakes in the marina at the north end of the town.

Odd Herring type gull Seaton Carew, UK

This bird was on the beach to the north of Seaton Carew late afternoon before too many flushes by dogwalkers. It stood out well and was watched for 20 mins with none of us being able to say for certain what it was. The only feature not visible on the pics well is the dark on the underparts which...

    Bristol to Kagu ?

Hi Guys Just found the thread, read it cover to cover. Fantastic!! Brings back loads of memories from a mere 2 months in Oz few years ago. I remember a Forsyth Park in North Sydney mooted as possible site for the nightjar. This was a few years ago but may be worth a go if you've not already...

    Durham Birding

In around 20 years of seawatching I have never accurately been able to predict passage! Strong winds will invariably bring better numbers of birds closer inshore but the really good birds are often on quieter days and there is much more at play than this. At this time of year there are large...

    Durham Birding

who got the little shearwater??? i was at work when the txt from rba went :C I believe it was your County Recorder and PH, a just reward for hours of staring out to sea. Well done! We are still waiting for our reward at Hartlepool now??

    Durham Birding

There is indeed a Blue-winged Teal, prob an eclipse male, there. It was still there around 7pm this evening on the allotment pool, mainly asleep on the islands. The hybrid was last seen here March time and had a bigger bill, amongst other things. Also tonight there was a 1st S Caspian Gull in...

    Kowa image booster

Thanks for the advice guys, I will look into both of these options. Cheers

    Kowa image booster

Does anyone know if you can get such a thing to use on the new Kowa 883? I seem to recall reading something about a 3X booster to go behind the eyepiece. Is this right or did I dream it? If so where can you get one from? Are they any good? Also can you get adaptors to allow the use of astro...

Kowa Service - What happens when you break your scope

I had a similar experience, I dropped my 823 from 2 feet up and it knocked the prisms out of line (or something, it was black when I looked through it!). Sent it to Pyser and was messed about for several weeks. I remember ringing them one day to see if they had a quote for repairs to be told to...

    Wood Sandpiper;;

How about Japonicus Buff-bellied Pipit? Would be impossible to tell from this one pic but the breast streaking does look a bit odd for Water Pipit. Perhaps the author of the recent article in BW (a BF contributor) could comment.

    Japanese pelagic trips

Hi I hope to visit Japan sometime next year (Feb/Mar time 2008) with some friends for a birding trip. I understand that Short-tailed Albatross is breeding at this time of year and we would really like to be able to see this magnificent species. Does anyone have any information as to how this...

    A stint, discussion

Am I not right in thinking that the white sides to the tail, clearly visible in the top pic, are a diagnostic feature of Temminck's. It all looks perfect for that species bar a slightly more prominent supercilium (illusion, only 1 pic!?!?), the bill even looks fine in the last photo. Cheers Richard

    Lesser Redpoll???

I agree, it looks good for Lesser, it would not stand out amongst a flock in Britain at the moment. I visited Sweden in the winter about 7 years ago and the birders we met there said that Lesser was spreading in Sweden as a breeding species, that was in the Nykoping area. We saw a large flock at...

    Redpoll species, opinions please...

....although the last one has no pinkish wash on the breast I think the bill looks a little bulky, but as Josh says being certain from 1 pic is difficult.

    Redpoll species, opinions please...

I would say they are all flammea, mainly down to the extent of the pinkish wash on the breast which is far too much for Arctic of any age or sex.

    Arctic Redpolls????

The first one looks like an Arctic for the reasons you mention. The middle 2 and last one are Mealies as there is a strong pinkish wash on the breast and the flank streaking is too coarse. Obviously this is just my opinion, I may be wrong....

    Gull hybrid??

Hi I think this type of bird is thought to be an extreme argentatus Herring Gull. You occasionally see adults with much reduced black pigmentation in the wingtip amongst northern argentatus and I gather these birds result from 1st years looking like your bird. As it looks structurally like a...
