    Walrus in Ireland

Chough easy enough at St Govan's head, 25-30 minutes further on. No puffins, but may be possible a bit further west on the peninsular? Stack rocks and the paths to the west were closed the other day, but should be open at the weekend. A nice area but it might be worth the extra drive to...

    Walrus in Ireland

Yesterday we arrived fairly early and watched it swimming around for a while, although always fairly distant and spending >80% of time under water. Went off birding around the coast for bit, then returned early afternoon and watched it sleep and generally flob about. It apparently hauled out...

    Walrus in Ireland

Travel restrictions and work meetings have finally aligned and I will be heading over on Wednesday, assuming it is around tomorrow. Does it haul out every day or is there any kind of behavioural pattern? It seems to be foraging in the mornings, but the messages on Birdguides suggest it is "off...

    The Goshawks Are Coming!!!

Schedule 1 species are protected from intentional and reckless disturbance, so as long as you don't climb out the hide windows and go in for a close up, you should be OK. Photographing Peregrine across a gorge is likely to be fine, using playback to draw out a breeding Dartford Warber is not...

Princeton University Press - 50% off Plus Free Shipping Worldwide Through 6/28/2020

They send to the UK (I hope!) as I ordered some books yesterday. The UK (or any variation of) is not on the initial drop-down list, but whichever country was selected it automatically worked out where I was on the next page. The UK was available on a later list when delivery address was input...

What was your 19th Corvid on your life list?

I'm on 74 Corvidae, including 27 Corvus (-1 when Northwestern crow gets the chop) I think my #19 Corvus would have been either Brown-necked or Fan-tailed Raven, but I don't think there is an easy way to work it out in Scythebill. Favourite has to have been New Caledonia Crow carrying around...

    Google Street View birding

All specied have links & images. There is a shared document so it is theoretically possible but i am not going to put a link on a public forum. They also list, birders, mammals, bird models & signs, among other things. It would be interesting to compare lists and see if Birdforum has...

Mongolia for snow leopards - heaven and hell trip

VotC is a fantastic place. Our views weren't as good as those in the Mongolia link, but this is a matter of luck. Some of the images coming out of VotC are truly gripping! We did it 'on the cheap' with no guide/translator which made things interesting, but it was a good adventure. In the valley...

Mongolia for snow leopards - heaven and hell trip

I saw 3 SL in less than 4 days in "valley of the cats" last May. Incredible wildlife in beautiful surroundings and a bit less stressful than this, although not without its complications! Snow Leopard are increasingly reliable in a few spots now. Certainly well worth the trip if you can go.

    Google Street View birding

Good work! I've only skimmed the thread so apologies of this has been mentioned previously, but the Google Street View Birding facebook group is on about 1150 species. It has taken a few thousand people a few years to manage this! Still a few to find...

small rodent ID, Lauca National Park, Chile

Hi mammal folk, Can anyone help with the ID of this little guy? It was in the 'Las Cuervas' section of Lauca National Park, northern Chile, at about 3500m asl. Presumably there aren't too many options in the area but I don't have any regional mammal resources. Thanks

Birds of Bolivia - Rip off?

I picked up a copy recently in Bolivia where they are still selling for around 50 usd, although i understand they're aren't many left and it is now hard to get hold of. Hence the reprint I guess. Bar a few ropey illustrations it is a very good book. I don't know the extent of the revisions in...

Wanted: Danum Valley Field Centre contact

Hi, Does anyone have a recent (2018/19) tried and tested contact to book Danum Valley Field Centre directly? I have read recently that the centre has been closed during Jan/Feb 2019 for works, making it even harder than usual to make contact and book, is this correct? Thanks, Matt

    Bargain offers on books

It is a very good price but I assume it won't stand as the listing is quite out of date. The passerines volume is now to be published as 2 books, at £85 each. Under Featherstone, rather than Helm, according to nhbs.

    Bargain offers on books

Bloomsbury have their annual pre-Christmas 45% off sale on at the moment (until this Sunday). Some good deals on Helm ID guides (e.g. Aus bird guide for £14) and the Poyser series but, unfortunately, it doesn't extend to pre-publication offers on the books I am waiting for in early-2018!
