Can someone please tell me this is a Dunlin….

I'm far from sure it's a wader (and that's only assuming I'm looking at the right thing)

Which Species Will Be the Next to Breed in the UK?

Same here! I remember making the trip to Starcross mental hospital a couple of times in a mini with a car load of other teens from the southeast, only to dip out

    Giant Hummingbird

Thanks. I'm still a bit confused though!

    Trochilidae

I'm a bit puzzled re Giant Hummingbird too. I've only seen them in the northern winter months. The furthest apart I've seen them is in northern Peru (near Cajamarca) and towards the southern end of their Argentinian range in Mendoza province (foothills).

    Giant Hummingbird

If Giant Hummingbird gets split into the two species as currently proposed, does anyone know what the currently know northern limit of Southern is in Peru and the currently know southern limit of Northern is is Argentina?

    UK Dragonflies and Damselflies 2024

We're up to 15 species out so far this year at my local pond in Bristol

What makes someone a 'Birding Legend'?

Like if they find lots of rarities, report them anonymously with top-notch directions, and when the twitchers bowl up all they find is the bird.... and a calling card at the viewing spot that's simply inscribed: "The Legend" 😁

    Barolo Shearwater would be nice

    The Ladybird thread

Another couple of micros from the last couple of days: a Red-flanked Scymnus from buddleia in the garden, and (much more excitingly) an Angle-spotted Scymnus from a local brownfield site.

    The Ladybird thread

Four-spotted Nephus found today on the ivy-covered trunk in Bristol BS5 pictured here. It's been a reliable spot for them since I first discovered them there 2 years ago.

    UK Dragonflies and Damselflies 2024

I can beat the date for White-legged Damselfly. I had my first in Bristol on 07.05. 24

    UK Dragonflies and Damselflies 2024

Is anyone able to confirm or otherwise my suspicions that these are female Scarce Blue-tailed Damselflies?

    UK Dragonflies and Damselflies 2024

You'll need wellies. Walk around the edges of the seasonal pool and check especially where the grass is emerging from the water. There are plenty of Common Blue-tails and other damsels there too, but not so many as to swamp you. I returned a bit later and found a male again fairly easily, and...

    UK Dragonflies and Damselflies 2024

I'm at the spot now and I've just found 2 males, so fairly confident they'd be findable if the weather's ok. I work on Thursdays unfortunately, though I could do thurs lunch time 1 til 2 or poss a bit earlier if that's any help. I'll put a pin in a map anyway when I get home.

    UK Dragonflies and Damselflies 2024

It's easy to access and a pretty small area, but I only found one individual today (though it was windy). If the other site you were thinking of is near Frampton Cotterell, then I believe they are in better numbers there, though I've not been there to look. If you want to try the Stoke Park...

    UK Dragonflies and Damselflies 2024

Scarce Blue-tailed Damselfly found at a Bristol site (Stoke Park) today for 2nd consecutive year. First found here about 4 years ago.

    The Ladybird thread

It's taken me until now to get 2-spot for the year, with these two in the garden. That's 25 species for the year now (23 on patch). They used to be one of the commonest species when I was a kid.

    First Butterflies 2024

My first Purple Hairstreak of the year was an unexpected find while looking for ladybirds 😊

    The Ladybird thread

Surprised to find a 2nd Red-rumped Scymnus today, and this time I managed a clearer pic (while in the field, and more by luck than judgement). It was a few hundred metres from the other one, in drier short-cropped mossy habitat at the edge of a housing estate on the other side of the M32 😊.

    The Ladybird thread

Not sure how many are recorded, but there are approximately 49 species known to be established in the wild (I think!). This excludes one that's not been recorded for many years and includes a recent split that has an unclear distribution. Rarities occur too, eg there was a Pink Ladybird earlier...

    The Ladybird thread

Took me a while to see the red markings in this pic. Pine Ladybird presumably?
