  1. New colony

    New colony

A new colony of monkey orchids has appeared elsewhere on the reserve, at the bottom of a steep slope
  2. Monkey orchid

    Monkey orchid

One of the rarest orchids in the UK, the monkey orchid naturally occurs in only 2 places in the UK (plus a third where it was introduced, at Park Gate Down). Unexpectedly small, it was a pretty little orchid with highly unusual flowers, resembling monkeys. This was the biggest I could find
  3. Lady x monkey orchid hybrid

    Lady x monkey orchid hybrid

The hybrid between two nationally rare orchids occurs in only one place in the UK. In that one place in the UK, however, it occurs in swarms
  4. Early-purple orchid

    Early-purple orchid

I was waiting to see this orchid since last year, when I had missed it by a few days. Saw it developing through March. Now, it is starting to go over, and yet still looks spectacular

Are there Red Kites near Stansted Airport?

Red kites are in a lot of places these days, keep seeing them in Peterborough

    Common Eider Morecambe Bay

I wanted to visit the reserve imminently. When do the arctic terns typically return? I have heard some things about divebombing terns here Has the eider colony declined here as well, or is it still large-ish? Is there any possibility of a red-breasted mergenser here?

    Spring and summer 2024

After an exhausting term 2 in university physics, I realised I had not been out birdwatching since the start of the year! Three trips to Thetford Forest followed, which resulted in incredible great grey shrike photos. Currently hoping for a golden eagle encounter in Spain, as well as seeing...

Comment by 'condor1992' in media 'Great spotted cuckoo'

    Near Alicante in Spain
  9. Great spotted cuckoo

    Great spotted cuckoo

After the dogfight, the pair settled down to call at each other in two nearby trees. One of them is pictured. Interestingly, this bird is older than the other one, which looks like a young bird. But today's dogfight cannot be described as anything other than displaying. Not the first year I see...
  10. Great spotted cuckoo dogfight

    Great spotted cuckoo dogfight

A pair of great spotted cuckoos was chasing each other through the area today. One of them is shown on the photo, showing the beautiful wing markings this cuckoo has
  11. Iberian green frog

    Iberian green frog

I like green frogs, they are so much prettier than what I am used to, and this is the prettiest frog I have ever seen. Although, Norfolk's pool frogs are prettier still...

    Birding in Alicante Province

I saw your report on eBird, nice! Also, I highly recommend Los Montesinos. The shores of the lake south of this settlement have a very large Montagu's harrier colony. There are Iberian magpies in Los Balcones, but they can be tricky to find- they are up one of the roads leading to the south...

    Iberian green woodpecker

    Cuckoo

Closest I have ever seen what was once the most difficult bird species for me to photograph. Worse than a golden oriole
  16. The eye

    The eye

A huge yellow eye staring at me from the side of the road
  17. Senator shrike

    Senator shrike

Smallest shrike (seemed half as small as the great grey shrike I saw) for the smallest insects. There must be a lot here, given the entire place stank of fish, blood and bone fertilizer
  18. Collared pratincole

    Collared pratincole

I like their breeding plumage much more than their autumn plumage

    Birding in Alicante Province

No. I haven't heard any reports of these owls for a long time. The only time I've seen this owl in the area was at El Hondo, when its appearance surprised a lot of people. I think your best bet is to visit the mountains north of Crevillent and explore the valleys (Bonelli's eagle also present there)

    Whimbrel

Whimbrel on migration along the coast
  21. Marbled ducks

    Marbled ducks

These two are the rarest duck in Europe to my knowledge. Additionally, these two approached as close as 2 meters to where I and some others were sitting. A VU-rated bird 2 meters from you. This is even more extreme than the great grey shrike which flew towards me recently to stare at me...
  22. Symmetry in endangered ducks

    Symmetry in endangered ducks

A pair of marbled ducks floating almost perfectly symmetrically in one of the best nature reserves for them

    Name a Bird You've Photographed

Spanish imperial eagle (Sierra Oeste de Madrid) Easily the most exciting encounter so far with any bird I've seen
  24. Goshawk

    Goshawk

My best photo of a goshawk this year, cruising above the plantations I come back to see her display above for the third year running
  25. Curiosity

    Curiosity

The showy shrike from Weeting at one point took flight, and flew directly towards me. It flew into a tree very close to where I was standing, and began peering down at me!
