Easily the best photo I've seen of this odd-looking species.

    A small challenge, Western Australia

No. 4 appears to be a Spotted Scrubwren (split from White-browed).

"There is a swallow that are flying 11 months per year, only come down to have eggs". Do you mean "swift" instead of "swallow"?

Id Help - Nimbokrang, West Papua - 21

Comparing the photos in Cornell/Birds of the World, I agree that Variable Goshawk is more likely than Grey-headed, given the yellow bare parts and the head not being a paler grey than the wings. It's a pity we don't have more than a hint in the photo of what colour the breast is.

Id Help - Nimbokrang, West Papua - 21

Variable Goshawk in New Guinea, if not white or all sooty grey, should be rufous below. The photo gives me the impression that the bird may be pale grey below.

Id Help - Nimbokrang, West Papua - 21

    1) is New Guinea Grey-headed Goshawk. 2) and 4) are immature Long-billed Honeyeaters. 3) looks more like Rainbow Bee-eater than Blue-tailed. 5) looks good for Rainbow.

Id Help - Nimbokrang, West Papua - 23

Variable Goshawk is the only raptor in New Guinea with a white morph. It's clearly not an albino.

Id Help - Nimbokrang, West Papua - 22

    5) is Coconut Lorikeet.

The Old World birds are mannikins; note the different spelling. African and Australasian species are still called mannikins; munia is mainly used for Asian species.

Id Help - Sunbird - Waigeo, West Papua - 16

The Olive-backed Sunbird has been split into several species. The one on Waigeo should be Sahul Sunbird Cinnyris frenatus.

What type of pigeon is this? Tehran, Iran

It's a Feral Pigeon (Columba livia) with stained plumage.

I think Joe is right, as the unbarred breast rules out Brown Goshawk.

    Dolphin Gull

Thanks to all three commentators. Personally, I find DMW's suggestion the most likely to explain the name's origin.

    Dolphin Gull

Very interesting, PS. The question remains, however; why was this gull called "The Dolphin"?
  15. B

    Dolphin Gull

    Quite plausible. Thanks, Jacana.

What is the origin of the Dolphin Gull's English name? (Leucophaeus scoresbii)

Comment by 'Bowerbirder' in media 'North NSW Coastal Emu'

I was fortunate to see some of these North Coast emus near Brooms Head (aka The Broom) back in the late 1960s.

    Help me identify this bird!

    Eastern Spinebill?

Australia, Qld, jondaryan. Variegated or purpleback?

Comparing the illustrations in "The Compact Australian Bird Guide" (Jeff Davies, et al), the only guide I have to hand, I think tossing a coin would be as good as any other method of identifying either species from your fine photographs.

This would be a splendid image for a Christmas card, Mali.

The best "Leatherhead" portrait I've seen, Ray.

Comment by 'Bowerbirder' in media 'Intermediate Egret'

Given the nuchal plumes and black bill, I think this is Little Egret, Shantilal.

I realised soon after posting the comment that, in most of Britain, just "Crossbill" would be sufficient.
